How do you guys like running for Prime? As an new driver would it be a place to go for flatbed? Im planning n getting my CDL through a community college as to not be tied to a company after training.
-
jcoop, I would recommend Prime's training program. Not because I am here and train people, but more because of the learning and experience you will get by going through the whole program is 100 times better than anything you will get at a college parking lot. From the first day you get with an instructor until you pick up your own truck you will be driving freight all over the US, not only gaining experience driving, but gaining experience with the complete job. Dealing with shippers and receivers, your logs and HOS clocks, where to fuel and park for the night, how to trip plan, and dealing with dispatchers and fleet managers. If you do go to a college, you MIGHT learn how to back a truck up and MAYBE drive around the block.
jomar68, PChase and TNhellbilly Thank this. -
A truck driving school like ones in a community college teach you to drive a truck, companies like prime that have their own in house driver training program teach you to be a truck driver.
driving a truck is one thing, going on the road with instructors and trainers teach you a heck of a lot more. I've been going solo for close to a year now and I still learn new stuff every day.
I quote Socrates who said "Only true wisdom come from knowing that you know nothing"
anyhoo a company training program can help you a lot better than a community college. -
You're commitment to Prime would be for one year after going solo... experience you'd want to have in any case before moving on from a training company. So what's the big deal about being "tied to a company after training?"

Commitment is 1 year from the day you get your cdl and become an employee is what I have always been told
