Experience in heavy haul. OTR. Doubles. Local heavy haul. Steel could local delivery. on doubles. I'm wondering what I'll need to do to get a California Cdl. Planning to buy a good 2010 or newer prime mover and run mainly South West.

Can I ask why you want to move to California, or USA? I'm just curious what motivates people to make big changes like this. I have wanted to visit Australia for years, but I'm afraid if I did I would not come home, I would want to stay there forever. Plus I'm scared of flying.

2 main reasons. I'm sick of being a company driver but the cost of used trucks here is prohibitive and there are very limited owner operator gigs. I have been researching and think I can make it work for me in USA. Your costs are way lower as is cost of living. Rates are comparable. I can buy nice home, truck, start up costs, and plenty left in reserve for what my house is worth here.
Secondly, it fits with my need to break out of a rut, and gives my daughter who is a successful actress in Australia a chance to try here luck in a much bigger market with many more films being made each year. (Not enough work in Australia for actors). Bottom line, our family is in need of an adventure. :)

    Jokingypsy Thanks this.

Australian costs of living must be enormous if California looks liveable by comparison.

At any rate welcome to the forum.

You could save even more and homestead in western Arizona. Even lower cost of living and a few hours from Los Angeles. Get a reefer trailer and run produce out of Arizona and California.

California is the most regulated state in the union for trucking. Oversize load transportation in California is a nightmare. That being said, it creates an atmosphere designed for companies, not individuals. O/O's rarely operate in california. If you can do it, you can make good money at it based on the lack of drivers, and demand for legitimate drivers in CA.

I personally, would look at Texas for residence for O/O specializing in OD (over dimensional) freight. Regulatory compliance is a lot easier there, but there is a lot of competition. As an O/O you could lease on with someone like GreenTree in Houston and make very good money.

Most CA based OD companies are very local and don't run out of CA because they are failure with the laws there, which differ from other states. As far as axel weight limits and spacing. It is a unique state. It's going to be hard to find good advice because it is such a niche market there due to different regulations.

I am from San Diego, CA. Born there, raised there, my whole life. I know the desire to be in CA. It's an amazing place. I know there is currently an interest in aussie female actresses, and it would be good for your girl. If your willing to be a trucker in the most difficult state possible in America so that you can be a good dad, then I say do it.

One of the biggest companies for heavy haul in CA is Contractors Cargo. But the specialize is super loads. Up 1m+ lbs and all that jazz. I have been on OD freight for 10 years and I know nothing about running OD in CA. Because it is just that difficult to be successful as an O/O there.
