They are state taxes that are OWED.......Just like the IRS, They can put a hold on your assets, levy Bank accounts and such...Even put a lien on your mortgage..
Hopefully...You only owe a small amount...the sooner you clean that up......The better.
and Yes......You can File for a New MC#.......But When you try to get IRP-IFTA, Your SSN or EIN# will track you to monies owed in Indiana..... -
I have a MC now and a new EIN. Do you use your ssn when getting a ifta???
-
No........but if your thinking of just leaving this problem..Instead of addressing it..It will come back to bite you.
And again......I dont think you will be able to open up a new IFTA-IRP until this matter is cleaned up...........
Kinda like running from the law..............If I may ask, Why do you have an outstanding balance on an IFTA account?? Thats Small monies ..But if you run away from it..It will Ruin your life eventually...
Take my advice and clean it up..The sooner the Better..
Good Luck to you -
What reason do you believe that I won't be able to??? New EIN, different state, new MC#. And from what you say no personal info to connect. I'm lost but I'm not trying to avoid the matter at all
-
Your EIN is tied to your Social Security number. The IRS will connect the multiple EINs and it shares information with other tax authorities.
It isn't illegal to have multiple EINs, but they are tied together. It just makes it easier to keep separate business entities tax filing organization separate until the final returns are filed. -
Tax jurisdictions are very aggressive about collecting back taxes owed. Penalties and interest keep accumulating, until the balances get completely out of control. Have you completed the past due returns to at least see what the balances are so you can get a plan in place to get the balances paid off? Like stayinback said, IFTA balances are usually fairly small and manageable, so it makes sense to pay off the balances now.

Indiana can be fairly aggressive about collections. They will put liens on any property registered in Indiana including bank accounts, take you to court and levy any federal tax refunds. Moving to another state will make it harder to collect but it will not stop the interest and fees or the collection process. It has hurt many people when they find out that their bank accounts are suddenly frozen. If you owe IRP fees, Indiana will levy your truck by VIN number so that it cannot be plated. I've seen incorporated companies get out of IFTA but not the IRP fees.
