I am looking for a newer 389, came across a 2011 with a factory original 500hp cat with dpf.. I thought cat stopped putting motors in otr trucks in 08/09.. Was it possible to order one in 2011? If so were they any good?
2011 389 with factory DPF cat motor?

International had a bunch installed. They were all pre-production, prototypes sort-of engines as CAT was getting out. We have absolutely no training on them. They are rare, but when we do see one for any engine work, we kinda have to send it out to CAT to get fixed.

It's just an SDP, same as the 2008+. The year doesn't mean much, there are 2015's on the lots now. If you search truckpaper you'll see a 2011 with a cat is rare but not impossible to find.

Thanks guys

Best way to word it , that era of emissions is what drove CAT out of the truck engine market . Avoid at all costs ! Before CAT was a great product !

not a lot of techs are trained on these engines but like anything once you understand how it works repairing it is easy. ard head is a problem, its the funny looking thing hanging off the turbo with a spark plug. the spark plug, pilot and main fuel filters need to be replaced at 90,000 a flame temp sensor which is a two probe sensor is common failure and is spend y because its like buying two sensors. check engine light is often due to "fail to ignite" its not a terrible setup its finding a shop capable of making the repair. but thats the case with anything.

2008 is the same motor as 2011

My other option is a 2011 389 with isx 500, truck has 280,000 miles but only 40,000 miles on full authorized cummins rebuild because of improperly cut liners. Is this a better option, ive done lots of reading but would like more input.

if you go with the cummins find out if the hi pressure fuel pump has had the head replaced. the ceramic plungers break the engine quits you get towed to a shop, the ceramic almost always takes out the crank. if your lucky you will only be down 2 weeks. the updated head uses a diamond coated plunger

Any way to visually tell if it has been replaced?
