Years ago when I was in my mid-20's I would stop at McD's every morning for my diet coke. I was at the drive thru when they opened. The college kid that worked this shift was great. It got to the point that he had my drink ready. Couple mornings when I was 15-mins early he would walk my drink out to me. He didn't care that he was working min wage. He had a job and was going to it right regardless of pay.

I helped him get a job at the company I worked for in Customer service starting at over $25k a year.

Risk vs. reward. I have 30 trucks waiting on me but can wait to sign the papers when I get a driver. Biggest risk is having 10 of the 30 sitting MT. That keeps me up at night and I haven't activated them.

But rewards are in direct relation to risk. It is all about minimizing the risk. What is nice is the State of TN is willing to help with tax incentives.

Shoot.. and I thought the story was gonna end with him offering free french fries as a bridge drug to get you on a full blown fast food addiction that helped him work his way up to owning the franchise all from your daily purchases.

Just humorous when an O/O wants more money for less work but then would expect a driver to do more for less. Most fail with employee's because they think they hired a driver, mechanic, dispatch/logistics, parts runner, general gofer, ect. You hired a driver. You may get lucky and get some that go above and beyond but don't denigrate the ones that don't. Just as it's nice to have those that you personally like. In the end you want someone to do the job they were hired to do(drive)to the best of their ability.

-I expect a driver to do the job safely, on time and in accordance with the law.
-I expect the driver to treat the trailers and his dedicated truck like it's his own.
-I expect him to to a GOOD POST TRIP INSPECTION so that if he has a soft tire/flat tire/light out we can get it fixed on his 10 hr break at the TS instead of the next AM at the scale house or replacing a blown tire on the side of the road.
-I expect him to help diagnose mechanical problems while he is driving so that he might communicate these problems to the mechanic instead of dropping it off in the yard with a note "AIR LEAK"...or "NO HEAT".
-I expect him to actually look at his boost gauge once in a while so that when he calls me to say he has "no power" and I ask is your boost lower than normal, he will actually know what "normal" is.
-I expect him to look at his alt gauge habitually so that he might notice the voltage dropping some day so we can replace alt without a service call and/or service failure.

Some drivers think this is not their job. Some drivers get a crappy truck that is always breaking down, it is the trucks fault. Or if they can't make any money, it's trucks fault. Nothing to do with the driver.....

Expand heck I have a truck just sitting cant seem to figure out a way to make it worth a drivers or my time to put one in it. I dont want a driver to not make money and I dont want to lose money. Numbers just dont seem to add up

Didn't say a good driver wasn't all of that. But if your expectations are that for everyone it will be tough filling thre job. Just that too many employers expect all of that for just paying for driving and also for the driver to share the risk with no/little reward.
