Hello, I'm starting driving school at my local Community College on Monday and am finally fulfilling a life long dream of hitting the road. I know the pay sucks and the hours are long and the general public has no respect for the transportation industry. I've always been happiest behind the wheel of a vehicle. My real question though are there any companies in the MN/IA area that will take a recent grad without any OTR experience that isn't a bottom feeder? I've had my eye on TMC for a while and really would like to start out on flatbed mainly because there is more physical labor involved. I don't want to limit my options too much though.

Try Schneider. Good company, and I think they take grads.

They're a site better than CR England, CRST, Prime, Pride, USA Truck, PAM, and pretty much every other trainee-friendly carrier I've heard of.

I am with werner and so far it has been good... one of the things I like about being with werner while I gain experience is that I have different options.. rignt now I am on a dedicated account.. I am consistently making over $1000 a week and home weekends... so I am happy.. but, I can switch and do flatbed with werner, Reefer, dry.. or tr OTR or another account..
Werner doesnt have tankers, which I think Schneider does...

I like having all the different options... I want to get experience... and I can mkve arkund and try different things without having to job hop... if I decide to give flatbed a try and dont like it, I can switch to something else..

There are drivers with any comoany that are happy and drivers that are not..

TMC came to my school and seems like a great company if you like structure. A friend of mine has a buddy working for them 7 years now and he makes 70k+ and likes it. The equipment with them is nice only downside from what I hear is max 62 mph. I have 2 weeks left in school on a 10 week class and I did apply with TMC however my first choice is tanker with Superior Carriers. Best of luck to you!!

When a driver tells you they make 70k a year, you almost have to cut that in half, because they have to work 70 to 80 hrs. a week to achieve this.

I agree with working 70 hours per week but 70k is still 70k...My dad drove flatbed for years and made roughly 65k yr and worked about 60 hours a week.
There are a lot of drivers out there struggling to make 45k a year and they work 70 hours a week so If it were me I would take the 70-80 @ 70k any day. JMHO
