I'm heading to Lloyd next week from Ottawa. Any opinions on whether to take Hwy 11 or 17 between North Bay and Thunder Bay? Thx.

Hi Thailover. No real right way or wrong way. Depends on your personal tolerances, vehicle condition and weather.

I find ON-17 between North Bay and Sault-Sainte-Marie to be dreadfully slow due to 4 wheelers who cannot maintain the posted limit, even with bare dry pavement and a clear sky. From the Sault to The Lakehead, gorgeous scenery but plenty of hill climbing. If your clutch or transmission currently show signs of slipping, ON-11 may be the road for you.

If the Mazda has a healthy and stout power-train, I'd run 17. Run Ottawa to Sudbury, take a nap or a full sleep, then start fresh. If you run 11, go Ottawa to Cochrane, then a full sleep. Not too many 24 hour fuel stops on either road, so best tank up before 8 PM. And I suggest these stops because lodging and fuel are available, plus going further means a greater chance of wildlife encounters in the dark. You may prefer a fresh start with daylight at Sudbury or Cochrane.

CBC Radio 1 broadcasts the Enviroment Canada forecast on morning and afternoon drive shows. Tends to be accuarate enough to help with trip planning.

May I suggest Target Motors Mazda Dealer in Thunder Bay for a full service? Locals speak highly of the place. Also Mainway Mazda of Saskatoon for the same reason.

Thx for the tips guys. I'm going to press on a little harder than that, trying to be in Lloyd by noon of the 4th day. I'm thinking: Ottawa-Hearst-Kenora-Clavet-Lloyd. That'll give me time to scope out Lloyd and settle in before reporting for work the next AM.

So what's the best area to look at if you want to haul propane or ng?
