I am looking at taking a job with a beverage company as a route driver. Starting pay is around $125/day, and after training for 4-6 weeks, it would increase to around $150/day. Start around 5AM; Monday-Friday job.

Is this a decent salary for a beverage driver, or should I look elsewhere? Also, given the hours you work on average per week, is flat rate pay a benefit or a downside?

I know that every job is different, but I didn't know if working flat rate was a better or worse deal in this type of work. For example, do you typically work 60+ hour weeks on end, or are there actually days where you might only work a few hours, where flat rate would be a benefit?

Always take per hour or commission or something. I use to work in a shop/drive where I was salary and always had the same pay come in. Was it nice when I needed to take off early or come in late for a dr appointment or something or take a sick day? Ya... Not very often did it work to my benefit lol

That pay is terrible considering the amount of work you will be doing, you will probably be working 12+ hours a day

you might as well go into food service, almost same work, better pay. Most of the bigger companies pay decent, everyone I know in foodservice, about 7 guys, differant companies, make from $70,000- $125,000.

Did just under $90,000 this last yr, would have done ALOT more, but I like working my 4 days, and I don't answer my phone( to come in) on my days off

fyi....Sysco just reciently bought out US Foodservice, might wanna wait out see how that plays out,
    Med/dental/eye ins, matching 401k....

$150/day is a joke for hard labor and the huge liability and stress of delivering in the city.

For that kind of money you can drive a forklift. Tell them to go to hell.

4 days a week? Sounds good. How many hours per day, though? What company is this? I might be interested in working like an egyptian slave from monday to thursday so I can finally enjoy a proper weekend.

I'll give you numbers that I know, and from southern California, not so sure how the same companies pay in differant states

US Food Service and Sysco....about even 5 days--$65,000+

Shamrock Foods, none of theirs drivers made under $80,000 last yr 5 day work week

Dominos Distribution 4 day work week 3-11hr days 1- 14-16hr day $80,000-$125,000 (coming in extra to make $125,000)

I just started with a Beer company. Here most make around $45k. I got in with this place basically to get my year of experience and Beverage companies are one of the few that hire new drivers but the more I'm here and the more drivers I talk to I'm rethinking my 1yr plan. I've been with a few drivers and one driver that's been with the company for 10yrs, one that's been in beverages for 17 years and high years on this place is common. I kinda see why. You CAN'T beat the hours! Hours are 5:30 to finish which is usually around 1:30-2:00 It's M-F, local and there's a lot of different things to do. You've got the side loader guys that handtruck everything in to stores, keg trucks, you also have the bulk & grocery guys is normal trailers just bumping docks all day, friggen EASY, and been a home everyday M-F gig, how to you beat that?

Whether that's a good rate or not simply depends on your area. Here in Central VA the $40-$45k range equals around $19-$22/hr which is pretty #### good here. Most jobs around here are in the $12-$15/hr range. I don't think for 8-9hrs of work making around $20/hr and having your weekends is bad. I know theirs also drivers at this place in the $50's but those are the top guys.

The hours are usually always early ending because places won't receive all day long, mainly only the beginning part of the day.

Thanks everyone for the advice! I am definitely kicking the job around. It was one of those things where I am willing to sacrifice a little in pay to gain some experience with a solid company, however, I also want to be compensated pretty fairly for my time, especially considering I do have driving experience in general.

Well, it's good to hear at least one positive experience as a delivery driver. And those hours would be perfect for me... hopefully this company does something similar. I guess I will see once I go in for another interview.
