The biggest difference that I noticed between the two is that I get a louder talk back with the astatic than the ranger. But my reports on the audio are that the ranger is way louder.

One thing to consider.....and this is what I have done in the past....I LOVE my Telex Turner RK56's......but the mic cord always ends up crapping out on me, happened on my old Turner, happened on my new one. I had a CB shop in DeForest WI install a different, longer mic cord....it almost looks like it comes from the Police/Fire mic cords that you see them wearing attached to their uniforms.....FANTASIC!

So that being said, if you decide on a RoadKing, search eBay for the old school Telex Turner's....you won't be disappointed. With all the reports of you guys running Astatic's, I might try that one next.

That's for sure, the Telex Turner RK56 cords are absolute crap.
I love the mike and have had the cord repaired a few times. Finally I decided to fix it myself. What was happening is a wire would break off at the cord/radio connection, they are tiny connections. I had to cut back all 4 wires to even them out then slid a piece of adhesive lined shrink tube over the cord. After soldering the 4 wires back I slid the shrink tubing as far up as I could to the solder joint and shrunk it down, then slid the metal clamp on and the shrink tube acts as a reinforcement at that vulnerable spot where the cord comes out of the radio. Haven't had a problem yet and I'm very happy as I prefer the audio of the RK56.

I also have the 636 and a ranger mic as well as stock Galaxy, Connex, Magnum mics but, prefer the RK56

Must agree on the RK56. Any Telex / Turner sound great. It's just the quality of the RK56 and the price of the others that hold me back.

Wish he would have had a better audio recording quality. There were differences between the mics no doubt, but not near as much as one would think given the variety of mics he cycled through. I know different mics are going to sound different on different radios, so it's only a guideline not the absolute. But it is cool to hear how they react to different systems.

Based on the comparison I linked, I really like the audio from the 'shure 577B'. It sounds a bit quite, but super clean and not over driven.
