Was going to suggest pay within 24hrs of delivery yesterday but got distracted. That's how Mercer does it. As far as drivers getting home often. If they're self dispatched there shouldn't be a problem with that. Only they have to figure out how to make money doing it. Everyone looks for different things in different companies to meet their own needs. Some people don't even know exactly what they're looking for when they land at a company. It's something that evolves with the job. Several years ago I would have thought all contract freight would be the best thing. Taking a stab in the dark and having to run exclusively spot loads from open boards caused me to have to find the money. In the process I figured out it was fun and I really wouldn't have it any other way. Bid on contract runs but never win any. That's ok cause my moneymakers have always been last minute hurry it up loads anyways. That's where the money's at regardless who owns the load. Back to what makes a company attractive, forced dispatch, by hook or crook, working contract freight would not work well for me. You know the companies, they say you have a choice on any load, but you better make the right choice when the load is offered or else!! No thank you. Although some companies could not effectively service their customers without that. And many owners do better under that sort of structure than they would on their own looking for freight.

Based on that last sentance it sounds like what you are saying is it essentially boils down to leadership; those who truly are leaders take charge of their own destiny and do very well while those who do not have that do better in a situation where they are led to a degree. As owner operators we are all leaders to a degree and that degree is dependant upon how much control we take or give up.BigBadBill and Derailed Thank this.

When starting a business if you run your business based on a perfect world you better make sure you put some money aside for the BK attorney.
Wichris, what you have is vastly different than what the opportunities in the market are. Shorter, regional hauls is the norm and will only become more common in the years to come. I don't see that as a problem but when the OP is talking about setting up a new business in order for drivers to make the same net as what your high mile, high gross drivers make he is going to see a lower net.
I have talked to a lot of people that are looking at doing what I did and the biggest mistake that I made and that others get into is they under budget on just about everything and over budget on gross revenue. -
Can you explain this a little further?
