Did his truck have a camera?
-
i was going thru atlanta the other day
coming from eastbound 20 onto northbound 285 was a swift that destroyed the 285 guardrail and flipped
and then coming from 285 onto 85 north, were two trucks at the 85 get-on ramp
i am not clear where this millis/jb accident was -
That 85/285 accident was the.Millis/JB.Hunt sceneEZX1100 Thanks this.

ok, thanks, by the time i went thru there, they were almost cleaning up, i guess
traffic was still backed up like crazy, i actually took the 85 south into atlanta (one exit) and came north, the ramp was a mess of non-moving vehiclesGa Dawg141 Thanks this. -
On I-85 NB just north of the I-285 overpass NE of ATL. Millis was on the ramp, from I-285 NB getting on I-85 NB. He took the downhill 35 mph decreasing radius ramp to fast and jack-knifed through the grass and across the right lanes of I-85 NB. JB was on I-85 NB coming from inside I-285, probably in one of the two right lanes.
JB driver was just trucking along at 0400 and suddenly Millis flies in front of him and wham. RIP.
This is the approach that the Millis driver was traveling on right before he lost it. What you don't see is the decreasing radius turn just ahead, slight downhill grade, followed immediately by the right lane ending. Cornering is also helped by rough pavement. I'm through this interchange all the time, using this exact ramp to get to the terminal I park at.
The usual hazard here is during the day when the supertruckers try to take the ramp and the merge two abreast. This time there was no traffic, only one truck that was moving too fast for the ramp for whatever reason I won't speculate. However, my gut tells me the crash investigators will find nothing wrong with the Millis truck's braking system.
Lepton1 Thanks this. -
it has nothing to do with "supertruckers", its just one more sucky road designs we have to deal with every day
i know that entrance well, it does tighten up as you get to the bottom of the ramp, millis lost control and came out into 85, i think JB should have seen him coming from the right (not second guessing, but just ASSuming) -
Yes and no. I think the worst part of it is the two lane approach before it splits SB/NB is marked in a way that would put someone that's not as familiar with what's coming, into a bad setup in the right lane that will end in about 5 seconds. Normally I'm already set up in the left lane, and wish I could pass out copies of "Merging for Dummies" to the ones that panic and try to force their way over. I usually see it coming and am already adjusted for safe ramp speed and make room. Then two or three more come flying in an try to take the same spot without losing a precious second or two by using the brakes.
