So wait, you're telling me he should give up his standard deduction in exchange of the itemized deduction? Do you know anything about taxes, or do you just post to see yourself post? Because we're talking a few thousand dollars difference, otherwise.
Unless he's making substantial donation to various charities, and has massive medical debts- it wouldn't make sense.
Form 2106 is used specifically to help with the filing of per diem, and work expenses not entirely covered underneath a schedule C. SC is for individual who are paid under a 1099, or 1090. Not just because "They're self employed."
NOT all company drivers are paid on a W2. An extremely low amount of companied drivers will ever file with an itemized deduction- as it it 99% of the time detrimental to their situation.

You are entitled to the itemized deductions that you find during the preparation of your return. If these do not amount to higher than the standard deduction, then you take the standard deduction.
My reply concerning the deduction was in response to your blatant statement.
There are some that have many deductions on the itemized form and exceed the standard deduction.

2106 may help him, but in my experience I've never seen it put a dent in taxes to any significant degree or another. Drivers get a hardon when they think about saving their federal income withholding from the IRS- only to find out that their deductions did almost literally nothing.
There are few that have valid deduction on an itemized form, and rarely do they exceed the standard deduction.
EDIT- I mean for Christ's sake, I've had quite litteraly hundreds of idiots come into my office screaming at me about their stupid ####### energy star appliances on itemized forms, rather than being concerned about the tens of thousands they were in debt on a mortgage so I could file a payment relief credit, or a first time home-buyer credit (granted, that was a few years back.) My point? My point is the general public knows almost literally nothing about taxes and tax law. You think you can get on this mediocre forum and mis-step a driver with your far beyond inadequate knowledge? Wrong this time, my friend. There's a reason you carry less than a 50% thank rate on your post rate. -
Back in 1984, it was a 2 day exam.
In 1986, they instituted continuing education requirements.
Every 4 years I file a renewal.
Have had a PTIN since some time in th 90's because I disliked sending my SSN out.
Used to work in an accounting office. Dealt with IRS audits and issues across the country. Very stressful environment and long hours.

In case you didn't know it, brother man- every level of PTIN is REQUIRED BY FEDERAL LAW TO RENEW THEIR PTIN VIA A TEST.
Level 1 is EVERY YEAR.
Level 2 is every THREE YEARS.
Level 3 is every TEN YEARS.
I worked in a tax office between the ages of 15 - current. I like the work because it's seasonal and I get to rip idiots off on their tax return fees with my 10% commission.
Enrolled agents had to pay a fee last year, and the year prior- but not this year.
Please, continue spewing from your mouth as you talk about something you don't know about. You might've filled taxes 20 years ago, and you might've been filled in on the situation then- but not today.

I paid this year for the renewal. It was quite a bit less than last time 4 years ago.
I pay the renewal fee for the PTIN I have since the 90's. It became required in 2010 and they started testing and fees. Enrolled Agents are exempt from the testing.
The only way to prove it, is to give you the number and my name. It will never happen.
I have never heard of the Level 1,2,3. -
You're paying some fly-by-night company to give you a piece of paper that claims you know something about tax law and code; however, you're just getting scammed. -
Have not worked on my return yet, but found a payment in December 2011 for 63.00. -
Ptin levels 1-3 have existed for over 15 years now, and I have to know that particular bit of tax law because it's thoroughly covered in ptin level 2 testing. -
Will look next week when I get home to check out on 2012 and 2013. I have 2010 and 2011 on this computer.
