I am currently writing a children's book and need some basic info on the most popular American trucks dating from around the mid 1980's up to present day – I mainly need to know about truck manufacturers and models that would have been used for short distance deliveries (not long trailer long haul types).

I'm interested in models that would have been used for: furniture delivery; garden supplies/plant delivery; food delivery (both chiller and non chiller types) and general deliveries for small to medium size businesses.

Any help and suggestions will be most appreciated.

How detailed do you need for a children's book? What you're talking about sounds mostly like the work of box trucks.

Yes, that looks like that type could be one of them. Can you suggest makes and models that would have been popular between the mid 80's - around 2000?

I need about 4 or 5 different truck models and styles. Ideally at least one that's a bit bigger than the one shown in your pic - ie one that would have been used by companies for delivering furniture/house moving work.

Many thanks for your help - most appreciated :)

Your old White trucks were popular back then. They merged with White/GMC and eventually Volvo.

Other than that all your major truck manufacturers made many styles.

    Peterbilt
    International
    Kenworth
    Mack
    White
    GMC
    Volvo

I would think kids would be interested in the real old stuff like this old 1916 White. But they like them all.

That looks really cute, but my story is based around present time with some trucks that are between 10-30 years old. Were the White trucks an actual manufacturer's name or a terminology?

If you can suggest some interesting looking models that would be most helpful - ones that would make good characters. I've become somewhat overwhelmed and confused trying to look through all the second hand truck sites.

    Many thanks

I ran a Mack R model from 1990 till it was totaled in the headon wreck I was in in 1993. Those were solid trucks.

Here are a few from 1980 to 2000:
    1981 Chevrolet D6500
    1995 Chevrolet Kodiak
    1992 Ford F 600
    1995 F8000
    1989 International 1600

    Go to this website: http://www.truckpaper.com/default.aspx?pdcl=1
It lists all kinds of trucks for sale with a picture of each one, and all technical specs. Pick out what seems to be the most popular by the # of listings, or use the pics. The Search engine is easy to use to narrow down choices.
