Hello all; firstly, thanks for the awesome site and information. I've been reading exhaustively for several days now; good of you to provide so much info. I currently work as a computer technician, but am looking to change careers. I spend most of the day in the car as it is - and I enjoy that aspect very much. I've been saving for a few months, and have the 3500 I need to go to a 5 week program here in town.

I wanted to get some information before I spend all of my cash, and let me apologize in advance because I know that this topic has been done ad nauseum. The problem being is that I'm getting so much conflicting information that I just can't come to any kind of consensus - so I'm going to explain my circumstances, and ask if anybody can chime in as to what they know about my employability in the trucking industry.

So I have 2 Felonies in Illinois. They are for growing pot when I was in college (I know, insert ####### comment here). My convictions specifically: Production of Cannabis and Manufacturing Cannabis with Intent. It has been 8 years ago now. I received probation, successfully completed, and have had no problems since then. I am happy to take a drug test; I have a solid work history, and solid references.

Is anybody going to give me a shot? My plan is to grab the CDL and head to either Bakken or Permian to haul water, but honestly, I'd take just about anything to get some experience first. I'm single, and can relocate with no problems.

I appreciate any info anybody can provide, and again, thank you all for your contributions!

    mje Thanks this.

You should be calling companies to get their input...

Your best bet is to get in touch with the school/company you are interested in. They have the final say whether you are hireable or not. We do not make those decisions, so any info from us would be useless. We could give you a completely opposite answer from the school/company.

I appreciate the replies. The school says no problem, but I don't explicitly trust them because of their financial incentive. I've contacted several companies and just get generic, we would review answers but nothing specific to my situation. So I'm looking for other truckers who know somebody with similar circumstances, or have similar circumstances themselves. Thanks so much!

Welcome to the forum. Before attending school, contact companies and see what they say.Dont wait till youre in school in hopes you find someone thatll hire you because you could be wasting all that money.I don't see this to be a problem,8 yrs is along time ago but im not a company owner either.

I'd be willing to bet CR England will give you a shot, but I'd also imagine you probably know they are like scum on the bottom of a nasty river... but they have been know to give lots of convicted felons another chance. Good luck with the process!

The 1st 2 posters gave you great advice...I'll jump on the same band-wagon. I'm assuming you're in Illinois. Try and get some info on Community College programs in your area...then check-out different companies that are close enough for you to go and sit down in front of them..meet them FTF , and discuss any options that you may have as far as employment goes. You can also go fill-out on-line apps , but the FTF thing would be a much better indicator of you chances of employment opportunities. Good Luck!

Well, put your helmet on, cause there will be some people's here throwing rocks at you. I have two drug felonies from 22 years ago. I have my hazmat and tanker endorsements and my TWIC, almost thirteen years experience with no accidents, no tickets, etc. There are companies out there that will hire me, and others that won't touch me. You will probably never be able to go into Canada, and I'm not sure but you may need to wait over ten years before getting hazmat and TWIC, I hope somebody here with more knowledge on this subject will comment on that. There does not seem to be any pattern as to the companies that will say no. Some of them that say no way are bottom feeders, and some of the great companies out there say twenty two years ago no problem. Rather then tie your money up in a CDL school maybe you would be better off going to a company sponsored training, with a hiring commitment upon successful completion. Plan on hair follicle drug testing and keep in mind one dirty test and you will be done in this industry forever. I don't do drugs and haven't since before I got my CDL, but there are a lot of people that are going to look down on people like us for our past mistakes, and always give you that crap if you want grow and smoke your marijuana you shouldn't be on our roads with us. Good luck to you, I hope it works out.

Hey Patty, I've phoned places, and what I'm getting back is: yeah we hire felons, but review each on a case by case basis.

But what has me spooked is that I've read in some posts that the manufacturing with intent is an automatic disqualification from the entire industry, and them some posts are like yeah I have a felony drug charge with intent and I've never had a problem getting hired. Very contradictory info out there on this topic. For the most part though, companies seem like they'd at least be willing to review my app.

But, like you said - that's not very definitive for the coin I'd be putting down or the time it took to save. Good of you to write!
