moving a semi to east coast

    We own a tractor and are looking to move it to the east coast

    we have a driver lined up to get it there , looking for the best way to go about it . we have no authority. contact shippers over there and get a load lined up from Seattle to Maryland? seems would be best to move a load over if going over there anyways .. any thoughts ?

    soon this tractor is going to Africa but might do some runs for awhile over on east coast before going .

    what kind of permits would we need just to drive the tractor only over there? seems a waste to take only tractor over there but we are not sure as we have no experience in running this truck.

    thoughts and help please

    I would think the easiest way would be- get a temporary tag and just drive it. The time it takes you to mess around with permits and a trip lease, you would be there.

    Without authority, a DOT number and a whole host of other state to state DOT issues you are running into a huge nightmare and headache.

    I would contact a drive away service and have them transport it for you. That will be the simplest and the easiest. Is it the cheapest??? Possibly not, but in the long run it certainly could be if you don't have all the legal stuff in order.

    If it were me I would get a temporary tag and put a sign on the side that reads: "Not For Hire" and drive it to wherever your going. Make sure when you get the tag you tell them it's not for commercial use, then when you get to where your going you can register it for commercial use in that state. I sure hope this helps and answers your question.

    Make sure you drive it back on the weekend when most of the scales are closed. Dont travel through Wyoming because port of entry is almost always open.

    It might cost a bit in labor but if it was me i would pull the 5th wheel and get a 30 day tag as a private vehicle and head out with out a 5th wheel mounted its just a truck and you personal vehicle.

    I got a trip permit for a week to move my Pete from ME to NC last year. You just stick it on the dash. I ran at night on the weekend. Permit was about 50.00.
    Glad I didn't get stopped though
