It maybe a company truck but it's also my bedroom and what goes on while it's acting as a bedroom is NOT anybodies business but mine. Did you know it's actually illegal to have a video camera anywhere someone may be changing clothes or naked? This includes bathrooms, bedrooms, hotel rooms, swimming pool changing areas etc etc etc. I don't know about the rest of you but I usually change clothes twice a day in the truck (when I get up and when I go to bed). I don't want a camera in my bedroom thanks. On the other hand I do approve of cameras pointed out the window and have one of those and will be adding a second shortly. Both I control that means I can turn them off if I choose.
***going off on a tangent here, you've been warned***
Call me old fashioned or whatever you want but if your going to hire people to drive $100,000 + of equipment, plus the cost of the load shouldn't you make sure your hiring the guy that knows his ### from a hole in the ground? Let's look at some of the so called improvements here.
E-logs= we can't trust a driver to properly do a log book
Governors= we can't trust a driver to the speed limit
Vodar (volvo's anti-tailgating radar thingy) = We can't trust our drivers to follow proper spacing
in-cab cameras (not outward facing) = we can't trust our drivers to drive and not have a rub n tug session
To me if I can't be trusted to these things and about a thousand others safely and correctly day in and day out, month after month then I have no business in the trucking industry. Any carrier hiring drivers that can't do even these basic things safely needs to have their authority revoked.Derailed and realsupatrucka Thank this. -
I've been driving with one for over a year now. I've had two assigned trucks during that time and have probably driven 20 more for one trip while mine was in the shop or not back in time.
We have the drive cam system - one facing the road one facing me. From driving all of those trucks on the same road I can definitely say some are more sensitive than others. There is an inertia ball that triggers the camera whether it's front back or side to side motion that triggers it.
If the light is green when you're get into the truck I think it's easier to see if you have tripped the camera. If the light only flashes red while say you're hooking, the camera recognizes that it was a quick disturbance and it isn't recorded. If you're hit the trailer and do a hard tug right away it might stay red as it thinks something happened because of the two different changes in inertia in a short time - that is sent to drive cam if it stays red. I've hit trailers in certain trucks where one motion keeps it red. It records the 8 seconds before the camera was tripped and the 4 seconds after on our units.
I'm not in favor of having them but it isn't the worst thing in the world. In my opinion, a lot of it depends on how your company handles it and what they're looking for. CWF varies by terminal from what I've been able to tell. I haven't set mine off on the road yet to the point where an instance was brought to my attention.
Like I said, I'm not a big fan of it but I suppose I'd have to admit I know it's there and I take it a little easier than I did before in certain situations. The ones I always hear that are in trouble with the thing are generally those that I wouldn't want to be anywhere near on the road anyway - that's at least the case at my terminal and the way they are used - our terminals vary.
To clear up one misconception - nobody, whether your companies people or drive came people can pull your up on a screen real time. The camera constantly records in loops and is only saved if you trip the ball hard enough. I do it a lot when I'm hooking my set so I try to be stupid. Pull my hat over my eyes, pretend I hurt myself, throw middle fingers and yell at something that's not really in front of me - the camera faces forward too on a split screen. The best one we had was a driver do the "bee's" scene from Tommy Boy..lol..Dinomite and The Challenger Thank this. -
Got to love the double standard. I can record other people mistakes, but I don't want no one to record mine. When I run over the 4 wheeler. I can take my dash cam out the window and nobody will every know, and I can say the crazy 4 wheeler just cut in front of me.
Just seems to me. That good drivers don't have nothing to worry about. But the guys who like to day dream and lord know's what else are the only ones whom seem to be crying. The good thing is nobody is forced to work for anyone who has them in their truck. I didn't even know ConWay had them in their trucks, but I do know more and more companies are putting them in. I personally think it's a good thing.
Thanks Jakebrake for the informative info. The Challenger, truckon and gpsman Thank this. -
Yes, but there's so few of us.
Right.
Right.
Right.
That is not the purpose. In the event of hard braking, a crash, etc., they are there to document what the driver was doing at the moment; nodding off/yakking on phone... or rubbing one out, etc.
Right. But that describes at least 90% of truck "drivers". There is no truck driver factory. The sole difference in the typical truck driver and the typical 4-wheeler is the truck. O B V I O U S L Y.
How this manages to escape so-called "professionals" is beyond my comprehension.
Opinion noted.notmycbhandle Thanks this. -
What makes you think they can't? I can see right now you're past due for a shave. If you'd lay off the FJ pizza your spongebob jammies wouldn't fit so tight either.
