#1. Do you even have a CDL?
#2. Do you know how to properly secure a motor vehicle on a transport?
#3. Do you know how to properly inspect and record existing damage before putting a vehicle on a transport?
#4. Do you know the process for delivering a vehicle to a dealer? Private party?
The list goes on. I just do not know why people think they can enter ANY business without knowing ANYTHING about said business. -
1. No, got the handbook and plan on getting it in the next few months(if I get an Oklahoma CDL can I operate in CA.)
2. Yes. I have a 36ft car hauler I have used for personal use.
3. I am in the process of learning about this business.
4. No that's part of why I came to this helpful forum to get pointed in the right direction. And I'm sure you are referring to me as the "people" who think they can start any business, well I'm not sure why you got worked up about someone who is asking about a career you chose. And I don't think I can start ANY business I don't know ANYTHING, I do however think I can try and learn about a particular business I have an interest in. But thanks for you informative first half of your reply. -
Please refer to your last reply. Then re read your original post. I am not "worked up" about anything. You posed the questions. Go buy a trailer and hook it to your dually. Be my guest. Not my dough going down the drain. I love it when people put a question on a web forum, then when they don't get the answer they wanted to hear they get all weepy.truckon Thanks this.

Yes Sir, I did what you suggested and read what I wrote. I can see how my wording was confusing, maybe instead of saying "getting started in the business", I could of said "getting started on researching the business of car hauling with the aspiration and intent of entering the profession." But i guess I wasn't expecting to recieve what could be percieved to be a negative attitude. Also as I suspected, my post was simply asking for advice on trailers. One aspect of me learning what professionals such as yourself think. From your responses I feel like you are under the impression that the post summed up all my questions. To clarify, it's does not. I have many questions, some I have asked other professionals in person. I however thought I could get some of my trailer questions answered here. Also, I do not intend to throw away my money, and am not sure what part of my original post made you think that was my plan.
And if you don't mind referring to my original post yourself, I only asked about trailers. This brings to question as to why you went off subject and became rash. I apologize if my curiosity into this career has offended you in any way. Feel free to ignore any further posts I have looking for seasoned professional advice.
Lastly, even though it is over the internet, I prefer people to directly attempt to insult me(reference the end of your question 4). I don't need it written in a round about way. This applies of course only if you continue to read my posts. Thanks again for the 1-3 questions. -
Sorry you feel like you are being insulted. That is not the intent. If you have such thin skin, this may not be for you. By the way. You are in the service, what did you do in basic? Run and cry when the DI yelled at you?
-
Well at least I was able to help get you to the point where you are man enough to insult directly, for that I am proud of you. Also your petty comments prove who has the thin skin. Good luck in your career Sir, and have a blessed Sunday.

OK Here you go. My career started 40 years ago as a Driver. Got my class 1 license, yes long before the CDL, which I still have. My career is in it's twilight and winding down. Insult me? please. Man enough? Been there and done that sonny. Drove Carhaul, Moved into trucking management over 25 years ago, Dispatched (like when you are getting 70+ railcars full everyday and your average dwell time is 1.28 days and consistently came in BELOW that #), Hired and Fired Drivers, My maintenance budget was quadruple some of these Dually/Wedge guys gross revenue, worked the terminal claims, sat on the company side of union disciplinary national hearings. Want more? All myself or any of the real Carhaulers on this forum seek to do is help and educate anyone who wants to come in to this industry, do it CORRECTLY, and succeed. It is the clowns that want to buy a pickup truck and call themselves carhaulers that make me shake my head.

I have a 2011 Chevy 3500 HD 4x4 6.6 Durmax and Allison 6 speed tranny. The manufature combined GVWR is 29,200. I tip the scale at 26,500 with three vehicles and only one of a larger size (1500 Ram). The truck can pull the this weigh without concern; however, when it comes to stopping it's another story. I normally always manually down shift when stopping or going down a hill and without manually down shifting the brakes would have a tough time stopping the vehicle and lasting. I would not want to tip the GVW with my 3500 at 30,000+ and I think with 4 vehicles (Unless they are all at or under 3000) it would tip the scale at 30,000+. As a point of reference, you may want to do some serious and extended research on just how many vehicle are avaialbe for transport in your home region or area you are willing to travel to. Limited vehicles, will limit the work, and limit your pay. Just my thoughts...best of luck.

Sounds like you have electric brakes, electric over hydro are another story all together, they will set you back in your seat without even using your truck brakes...
Also if you have straight electric brakes you need to make sure you adjust them often, grossing a little over 26k you should have no trouble stopping, I'd get your brakes checked if I were you.
