My hubby is a newbie who just got out of school & obtained his A...he is trying to decide on his first company. He's narrowed it down to Abilene and CT Transport. Things we are considering: w/ Abilene he will get an awesome opportunity to see a wide variety of conditions he would potentially face in this career w/ their 6 month training, however, he would likely be out upwards of 10 days before making it back home for 2. W/ CT he would be home every weekend (or just about), concerns here...this is flat bedding and is 3 weeks truly enough to get what he needs to be on his own as a newbie. Other factors: we have a 4 y.o. son (which makes CT look very attractive). Any advice you can offer w/ regard to your exp w/ either of these companies that may help in our decision would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance![]()

Abilene is a great company
must be they didn't accept me........sigh
my belief is he just needs to go get experience for a year
after that he will have a better idea what suits him
many companies lie about HT
unless it is a day job
assume he isnt going to be home..........muchJohnBoy and Truckerswifey404 Thank this. -
Thanks Cranky, we're figuring he prob won't be home much....at least that 1st year trying to get that experience...this one is a toughie...but I agree, I said the same thing to him you're not stuck w/ your first gig...the other thing looking really attractive right now w/ CT is that tuition reimbursement...hoping we can come to a decision this weekend.

Hi, just curious, is CT- Cargo Transporters in Claremont, NC. Thanks
-
BFL-He would be doing regional out of Mocksville. I don't believe it's Cargo Transporters, but I could be wrong though, is Cargo Transporters the same as CT transport of Comcar?
-
Cargo Transporters and CT of COMCAR are two different companies. CT of COMCAR is a flatbed carrier and Cargo Transporters is a dryvan carrier. CT was formerly known as Coastal Transport.
Truckerswifey404 Thanks this. -
If money is a major concern,
I'd shy away from coastal.Truckerswifey404 Thanks this. -
I'd go with Abilene. He will get lots of experience driving around big cities which is a must nowadays. Heres a link to three threads on them:

On that last thread, BigBrin is a trainer for Abilene. On the first thread, JB is a finsher for them too. Both can answer any question you might have in regards to what goes on.

Thanks so much, I'll pass the info on and we'll read those threads

I also am with Abilene and can answer anything for you. I've run everything but tanker and cattle. That being said your hubby would need to make a choice on flatbed or van/reefer. We are a small company and Sally our recruiter is a straight shooter and tells it like it is. When I ran flatbed I used to laugh at the CT guys b/c they couldn't back, I think that is where most got the fallacy that flatbedders couldn't back...lol. Concord is a good location, I used to run for Cardinal back in the early 2000. Being there home time wouldn't be a problem. We have the usual 10 day out 2 day home policy but it is up to the driver as we can accumulate home time. Our orientation is not paid but he will make that up when he goes into Team Mode for training. We do have a long training period but I think that is crucial as he is just not kicked out the door to fend for himself. BigBrin kept on the company about doing the finishing portion as a northeast driver. I've mentioned it in the past that should be done. He was instrumental in making that happen. Nothing like kicking a new driver out the door and then giving him a run to some of the places we go to in NYC.JohnBoy Thanks this.
