Them europeans do have inbuilt rollcages.
Now I have to differ with you here... the one thing thats built tought In Old US trucks are the Bumpers other than that we don´t agree.
If you really want to look at tanks check them 70´s and 80´s European Conventionals.
The Tractor itself weighs 5-6K lbs more than a similar American.

Has the fact that they are cheap ever come into your thought process? Safety is a far less deciding factor than the price, ESPECIALLY when it comes to the likes of Swift.
Fuel economy probably enters their business plan too. But that is subject to interpretation. For example there is a local family owned business that run about 30 trucks. ALL KW T600, they seem to fit their MPG requirements just fine and you would not find that company with a Volvo on their lot. -

Equipment goes by hourly fuel usage, not mpg.You canucks must do it different.I've had several from Hoes ranging in from around 25hp up to my last one which had 113 peak hp.Never heard of a 1000hp Hoe .Inform me who's built one. -
Gotta chime in here. I drove a 610 when I started with the 425 D12. It didn't seem to pull very well... nowhere near as bad as a Mercedes though. The jakes were a joke, there was nowhere near enough leg room (mind you, I'm 6'5"), and the sleeper was a touch cramped. Other than that, I liked the ride, the handling, and the MPG was pretty decent too.. in the 7s grossed at 80K in the midwest. If I were buying a truck where cost and fuel efficiency was a BIG factor, I would have to consider a 670 just due to how cheap they are on the used market.
Now, by comparison, most recently I've been driving a Western Star 4900EX with a 515 Det, otherwise drivetrain specs seem pretty close. Lotsa room, lotsa power, good Jakes, Cadillac ride, PLUS mpg in the 7s at 80K running flat land. I NEVER expected THAT. Granted, the Star doesn't turn like a Volvo, but ya can't have EVERYTHING. -

Thats some great mileage Captain....I've never owned anything that got near that and have seen the time I would've bragged if I could've gotten 4.5 mpg out of a worn out ol'KW running a 3406a that wouldn't pull a wet noodle out of a dogs butt .Ahh..She was pretty tho'.

96 3406e 13 spd with over 1 million miles, 6.8 to 7.5 but only if you were running 60 to 65.

I've never had anything hit near that 7.5 mark myself.Since I've been sick,I've been running a retired friend of mines truck a few days a week (He hauls his own equip a day or two a week also) we are almost to the point of it being a hobby more than anything else right now as we are both on the puny list. I think he is just doing it to keep us both from just quitting everything and laying down. It's a '90 w900l "007"limited ed with the aerodyne hilton running a Cat b tweeked to 475 with a 15spd, and we drag a lowboy (not the ideal lowboy truck by any stretch of the imagination)around in about 150 mile radius of the house.I've never checked the mileage on it because he always fuels it at the shop and no more miles than its ran its a spell between those times anyway. We are hardly ever near grossed out but we both drive it like we stoled it and he's claiming 5.2(and is tickled to death with that) for an average and since it is really hilly around here with some of them being pretty steep and a lot of narrow two lanes with some stop and go,I felt like that was excellent mpg.

That T6 was 5.8 at best if you were running 75.
The largecar I'm hauling cars with did 4.9 average for march. Not too good.
I know if I was pulling a flat and staying around 65 it would do 6 plus. -
For the Western Star guy,
Can you please provide the specs on the tractor? Those are some great figures.
Muleskinner and Brick,
Paccar makes some great products inxcludeing the T2000 and T660 and Peterbilt 380 series, but If I were to choose a highway tractor geared to get better mileage it would be a Volvo or a International Prostar.

Sure. 132 BBC, 515 Detroit, 13 OD, 3.58 diffs, 82" Ultra High sleeper, 12-40 axles, twin 150 gal tanks, 22.5 Lo Pro rubber all around, 244" WB. I figure the sleeper makes a difference because it's only a few inches shorter in height than the dry box I was pulling. I've always managed to get really good mileage out of Detroits. Like a Cat, the rule seems to be gear fast, drive slow. I never go over 65 MPH, and try to get through the gears as quickly as possible by shortshifting. I'm sure if I matted it running through the gears it would drop into the low 6s. I have seen as high as 7.4 hauling on flat ground over a full load of fuel at 65 MPH, but I think I had a tailwind.
One more plus: a decked out from factory 4900EX is just about as close as you can get to a Large Car... stylin and profilin!!
