Once I heard many years back that a Willy Shaw driver sent a Western Union to his dispatcher saying, "I'm now pulling an open top trailer, please advise me where to pick up my next load."

I suppose he feared calling the dispatcher up on the telephone.

He is not ON the interstate, he is UNDER it. It also helps when you cut your turn too short and hit the support structure instead of the bridge spans.

Take a look at photo #2

I have never been out there before, so maybe I should not comment, but was the bridge marked? I am going to guess that most bridges that have ever been hit by a truck before have probably been hit more then once. Why aren't these low bridges properly marked? We all know ultimately it is the drivers fault, but I keep seeing these stories and have to wonder, somewhere there is a cop, firefighter, or tow truck driver out there that has seen these low bridges hit before and should be suggesting, hey maybe we should put a couple more signs up, maybe farther up the road. Hell, with these auto braking gadgets they keep inventing and radars that keep you from following to closely why don't so done invent a "hey dummy, your truck is not going to fit under that accident avoidance system." there will always be rookie drivers on the road, how can there be this many bridges either not marked or are drivers just that bad? To look at the pics the bridge does not look obviously low, so I'm just asking. I know a couple bridges around here that are even marked right lane low clearance, left lane 13'6. We as drivers need to be responsible, will not argue that, but Uncle Scam should know by now where all these low bridges are and have them marked. Hell, look at these truck GPS systems, after all these years you would think they know where the low bridges are.

The driver it totally at fault on this one. He hit one of the cross members that sit on top of the pillars that support the spans. This is 2-3 feet lower than the actual bridge. Like I said, take a good look at the second photo, he did NOT hit the bridge but the support structure.
