One thing you want to make sure of when you're talking with recruiters.. Make sure that they understand that you got your CDL on your own, not through a school. And make them notify you In Writing, that they will accept you for orientation/training. The reason I say this is that almost every one of these large carriers have a requirement that says you must have completed a course at a CDL Driving School in order to qualify for their training program.. some of the larger driver mills will get you to "orientation" then tell you "so sorry, you're not qualified" no driving school certificate? Well, we can fix that. just go through our school, which they will charge you an exorbitant amount of money to attend, and then work you like slave labor until they collect back the cost of the school. Or they may require you to take a 'refresher course'.

Ok so the latest news. I heard from Werner today and just like all the other companies so far, I have to go to a school or acquire 30 days of experience with a reputable company that would be able to verify my 30 days before they would take me on for training. I told them no, I will find someplace else that will train someone who already has a CDL and just needs practice and training behind the wheel.

On a good note, I received another call today from Northern Refridgerated confirming that the gentleman I spoke to yesterday got my application, DMV history, and other paperwork that I faxed him yesterday afternoon. He then told me that looking at my employment history he saw how much I make with the union gig ($30.73 per hour) and wanted to make sure I understood I would not make that with them. I let him know I am fully aware I will be taking a big hit on pay no matter where I go or what I do and that the hourly amount can technically be considered $15 per hour with the union because I have only been able to get work about 6 months per year the last 3 years (hence why I am looking for something steady and solid). I also asked him what their drivers make per load and he replied that their "average" driver makes about 50k per year and guys that do every little load they can make about 70k. Now I am not foolish enough to believe that the average he told me is for every driver and am certain there are some that make less and some that make more. He also said everything with my app and driving history looked extremely good and that he was sending my app to the managers to start a background check and that I would hear from him again within 48 hours. Again...fingers crossed that these guys will give me a chance!!

Sometimes smaller companies are an advantage...less drivers to compete with for freight..Hope it works out sounds good

Negative. I did not hear back from NRT today. I did try and call the guy I have been speaking to today at around 1:00 this afternoon but kept getting his voicemail. I left him a message letting him know that I would just like to hear back from them whether it was good news or bad news. I have heard that background checks can take a couple of days so maybe I will hear from them on Monday. If I do I will definitely let you know. As I stated in comment #33 I heard back from Werner but that went nowhere. The lady said she would e-mail me a list if schools and low and behold I get a phone call from California Truck Driving Academy this morning saying they got my personal info from Werner...the vultures are circling. Hahaha

And I would assume Challenger that when he said I would hear from him within 48 hours he was speaking "business day" hours so I am not holding my breath this weekend. Hope all is well for all of you out on the road and I appreciate the work you all do. Have a great weekend gents.

If NRT doesn't work out, try the ltl carriers for dock positions which can lead into jobs. Also, check your local beverage distributors. Never give up. Something will come your way. Have you tried Swift?? They may or may not take you.

I did try with SWIFT and was told the same deal about going to school or a refresher course.

Have you looked into working out on the farms?? I'm not sure on the seasons. Did you try Covenant?? I'm sure someone else will chime in and offer suggestions.
