My wife is a nurse and if this guy doesn't have a job, how is he going to afford to go to college? Nursing school is expensive and my wife got lucky enough that the local hospital paid for it otherwise she wouldn't have been able to do it. And if you know where you can make $60k+ in the first year of being a nurse then please let me know because my wife has been a nurse for 4 years and doesn't make that.

As for the 2nd part of the post, you do not have to "build up" 10 years of work history. I'm 24 years old. 10 years of work history would put me at 14. I did start working jobs after school at 14 but that isn't the point. Assuming he was in school until 18, that only leaves 7 years he has to account for. I had years in my work history that had holes in it but it was never a problem when I applied at a few of the megas. Conversation went something like, "What about these years you didn't have a job listed"? "I was unemployed". "Ok". I never had a problem getting hired.

Just start applying to all of these companies. If you have worked "under the table" jobs like cutting grass for people or painting or pressure washing etc, list those on there and the time you have to account for gets smaller and smaller.

If you dont have a work history, I would really reconsider trucking. If you dont know what a 40 hour week is like. How are you gonna handle working around the clock..?

My post was meant to be sarcastic. But he can afford college by working at Taco Bell and going to school at the same time of course.

Where can you make 60K first year being a nurse, I'm talking about RN: California, New York, Connecticut, lots and lots and lots of places. And they can usually sign up for as much overtime as they want to 60k is easy to surpass. It says you live in Alabama, which is unfortunately one of the poorest states in the country where salaries for all jobs are very low, so an RN might not make that in a small very poor southern state like Alabama.

I'm sure CR England or Western Express would hire you even if more respectable companies don't.

Yes I'm joking of course. I just think its not fair how SOME of these companies turn down people who have perfect driving records, no criminal record, and they turn them down cause they haven't worked for 6 months.

She is a RN. But somehow I would think that a $60k a year job in NY, CA, and CT would be like a $10k job here. And 99% of the hospitals around here work the RNs at 3 12 hour shifts per week and if they hit 40hrs in a week they get sent home. They don't like paying overtime. She still makes $40k at just over $20 an hour and with the cost of living down here its pretty good but $60k would be even better :biggrin_25525:

Try USX. They hire felons, I know, Ive trained a few. They don't care about your work history, provided you don't lie to them about it and are willing to sign an affidavit saying you were unemployed. They hire 22yo + and they have their own school they will send you to. They also have dedicated routes unloading trucks that a new guy can make decent money on, or you can team otr. Your first year rate will be low but its like that just about everywhere.

I hate sounding like a cheerleader LOL

It's probably the insurance companies saying they wont insure anybody with less than 6 months..The only ones who will hire you are self-insured companies..

My son is 21, earned a non-specific associate degree at comm college, can't find a full-time job here. Retailers are hiring lots of young people but only giving them a couple of days a week. Too much competition from laid-off adults and seniors working past retirement age. Next two years of college will cost twenty thou a year, then two plus years of grad school. He loves driving and trucking is the only occupation that pays enough and piques his interest to help him save for college over the next ten years. He's young, has plenty of years left to work toward his goals. Who knows, maybe trucking will become his true calling?

Plus, he'll be able to move out of the house and start his own life! He starts CDL classes next week!
