Alright, I'm not sure if this has been asked before, sorry if it has, I know some people get touchy about repeat topics. I was wondering if someone could give me any info I need about transferring to a Washington license. I currently have a Class A with airbrakes in Oregon. I drive for a 48 state carrier and an opportunity has came up to drive local for them in the Seattle/Tacoma area, so I'm looking to move there. I've never transfered my license to any other state before, I've always lived in Oregon. What is the process like for transferring? Do I need to re-take any tests? Also, I heard someone saying that Washington CDLs are different in that your commercial and noncommercial driving are separate records, is that true? If so, does that also mean that you get two cards in Washington, CDL and DL? Also can I get an enhanced license (passport license) with a CDL? My company doesn't go to Canada, but I'd like the enhanced license for crossing into Vancouver in my car without needing to carry my passport.

    Hello,
I'm in same predicament as you. From what I understand, its a simple license change just like a regular license. Once you declare yourself a resident of the state (you can register to vote there with a valid address), you can surrender your current license from whatever state and get a new one for Washington. I'll be moving to Bellingham and will run Refrigerated out of Fairview Oregon or Dry Van out of Kent Washington for Knight.

Can't remember whats involved in transferring your license but should be fairly easy. You only get one license and I don't think anything is separate but don't quote me. Getting the enhanced license is easy just tell them when you go to get yours and I think you have to pay a little extra.

Thanks for the quick info, guys! I searched all over the Washington DMV (I guess it's called DOL there?) site and I couldn't find any info on whether or not a CDL qualifies for enhanced license. I couldn't even find a picture of an enhanced CDL in the sample pictures of all the different license types. So you're saying that you know for sure you can do that with a CDL?

To transfer CDL to Washington to going to cost $191.00 ($102.00 CDL fee, $54.00 license fee, $35.00 application fee). HazMat is an extra $10.00 for the retest. The enhenced DLis between $3.00-$18.00. $3.00 per year left on DL before it expires. Take about 2 week to get. Can get more info from dol.wa.gov.

Regular DL, CDL and enhanced are all combined on one DL. Anyone can get enhanced DL with all the documents.

If you go in with either your birth certificate or passport you can get an enhanced in about 15 minutes. I got mine that fast and it's an easy process. I believe they do a background check while you're there. The enhanced license takes the place of a passport as far as crossing into Canada goes. You must have either a passport or enhanced license to do commercial in Canada.
