I am not sure if this belongs here but my reasoning is this group is most likely be able to answer/help with my dilemma. As you may have noticed by my handle I drive a tow truck. I have been towing trucks for almost 30 years. I live in the north east and this winter has really got me thinking it's time to make a change. I love what I do but it is very labor intensive, long hours, freezing my a÷× off. Well long story short I looked into driving a tractor trailer either over the road or regional. So I spoke with a few recruiters. Low and behold because the majority of my work is local they either won't talk to me or want to start me at a brand new driver rate. Does anyone know of a company that will look at my experience and not lump me in with someone who graduated from Acme driving school 15 min ago. I know how to drive I have moved a lot of heavy equipment with low bed and landall trailers as well as towing. I have thought about working team even suggested it to one company and got no where.
Any positive advice would be appreciated. Maybe some one knows of a company in or near Boston area looking for over the road driver who although not perfect would be better than a but in a seat. Thanks in advance
advise greatly appreciated

I'm still trying to figure out how to post a thread as I need some mechanical advice, but I know of my company that I'm leased to. It's all owner ops and I can give you a number if you'd like to contact the safety/recruiter here. You can either come in and they'll help you start as an owner op or can tell him you're looking to drive for someone if there are any openings. We run team only, very small company, but the pay is very good as either the owner or just a driver.

Any of the mega carriers will hire you. Swift, JB, USX etc..
-
Yes mega companies will hire me at new driver pay that's the issue. I don't think I am gods gift to truck driving but feel I should be able to do better than new driver pay.

Pletcher, if the people you know are looking for someone from Boston area by all means I will take a number

I need advice BIGTIME. I'm finally getting to start on own as o/o. Very close yo buying truck. But I have to admit I'm nigh eve when it comes to spec out a truck. No idea far as wheelbase, gears, auto or 10 or 13 speed. I'm definitely getting a Volvo 670 or 780 new. ( have to cause of loan terms) I plan on buying reefer also. So more likely all my loads be heavy and in mountains tho I'd prefer yo stay on 10 most the time as I live in Florida. But know freight doesn't work that way. Could someone please help and explain why so I know. Thanks so much. Hope all is well with ALL and families.

Have you checked with the equipment rental places?
-
if you towed MD or HD and did some recoveries a local machinery rental or construction co that moves its own heavy equip would be a place I would be looking. The transition should be easy and your previous experience would fit better than OTR Van or Reefer.

Schneider might hire you and run you through their refresher course. List on the application the tractor-trailer lowboy and landall experience, not just the tow truck. The tow truck is the problem so focus on the others.
Western Express might help you; lots of negative comments on here about them but many drivers been there for years.
Also try:
Paschall Truck Lines
Super Service
Pride Transport
Big-M Transportation
These are just stepping stones to where you want to be.towtrucker Thanks this. -
Maverick(reefer division) and Navajo and Stevens have trucks spec'd for reefers and the trucks have APU's.
Same with TransAmGITRDUN45 Thanks this.
