What is the difference in today's drivers, and yesterday's drivers?

I have a Better one........

in 2004......I blew my radiator out on interstate 80-90 in Ohio by exit 13 near Holidaay City(Westbound side)......

All i Needed was some water to get me to fremont so I could throw in a new Radiator.....

NOBODY Stopped for 2 Hours!!!! I Had to Finally Call a Tow truck ($500 bucks I could have saved).....


but the real jerker?? I counted on my fingers about 8-10 trucks on the radio ..And this is what I got..

"Driver, You alright?" or "Driver you need help" Or Do you have help coming?".....

I Responded to each and every one and guess what..Nodody stopped.. NOBODY!!!

I said..."Yeah I could use some help"...But gone by deaf ears....


i was up in Michigan back in February during that real cold snap........My Blend door motor took a cr@p on me...stuck in the 'Cold' position

Again...Nobody to Lend a Hand and let me warm -up for a few minutes...nearly froze to death up on 131 near cadillac.......

 

None of it in the last year I have stopped to assist at 3 accidents, stopped to help another driver who had dead batteries, stopped to help w driver who had his tarp almost shred in the wind. Just yesterday a fellow came to the shop my truck was getting a service he needed someone to help him air up his truck and pull it to the shop, injector problems the truck wouldn't run, I sat there with ab air hose from my glad hand to his truck for 10 minutes, then used my tow rope to pull him over to the repair shop. The HOS dont have anything to do with taking some time to help someone in need that is just an excuse used by those who dont want to take the time to help.

 

To put this in perspective, the debate about the "new generation" of drivers was a hot topic at truckstop lunch counters in '77 when I first drove. I think every generation looks upon the younger generation and shakes their head.

Here's a quote from Plato (written about 2000 years ago):

I couldn't find it but there's another quote from back in antiquity talking about the rude young generation racing their chariots through the streets.

I think experienced drivers owe it to new drivers to help out, explain, and educate... and have a LOT of patience.

 

Its true. Theres a lot of drivers that Dont Care that you're out there. Had a guy pass me in the tunnel on the Snoqalmie pass. Drivers run up beside you so you cant get over when theres a stalled car on the shoulder.Stuff like that.

Many years ago I heard that quote and since then I has seen it attributed to Socrates, Cicero, Lincoln, Aristotle, Egyptian scrolls, the Assyrians, quoted in a Oakland Ca Newspaper in 1922, plus many more sources and Plato as you posted.

BTW I recall my folks quoting young people an their Rock-n-Roll as the route of evil, then a few years later adults basing “backmasting” was the cause of teen pregnancy, and the list grows from there.

In this day and age if I was stopped along pavement and anyone but LEO stops to ticket (harass) me, I would see it as a predator looking to take advantage of me, and I would take a very dim view of that situation. I can help myself, I set my life up that way.

So IMHO all truckers (and any motorist) should only help the people they choose to help, and are under no requirement to do otherwise.

Over my driving lifetime I have circled back to help people I did not know (I have circled back to help 100% of the people I did know, no matter what) but it was because I had the available resources to do it.
　

 

Aha! Plato wrote everything we know about Socrates, as his disciple and student. However, that quote is actually from Aristophanes, in the play "Clouds"... which was a comedy poking fun at Socrates. I learned something new...

The biggest difference I see is that yesterdays drivers got more done with less resources, whined less and had more fun doing it.
