My Dad completed the Swift School and has been on a Mentors truck for about 2 weeks. Last night his mentor was backing him up at a truck stop about 1:30 in the am and he backed into another Trucks bumper. What are the chances that they will fire him? If they do will he be able to use his CDL to get another job with a different company? I am really worried for him. TYIA

He should be ok. I had one student have an accident in my truck when I was a mentor. I drove overnight through some flooding areas and when the student took over driving in the morning (this was towards the end of training) I told him to wake me up if he had any problems. He ran into a road closure... didn't bother waking me up and decided to turn around on private property and hit a building. His only consequence was a close-quarters class and some paperwork. He still finished his training on time 2 weeks later.

If his mentor who was ground guideing him, failed to stop him.
Just as much fault as the spotter.. Hope it works out for him -
Did your Dad mention how much damage to the bumper it was?Swift will probably keep him with probation.Tell your father from now on when backing to get out an look no matter what his mentor says.He took his mentors directions rather then using hisown judgement.Sometimes mentors don't see a certain something and the student solely depends on his hand signals. They should'nt do that.Tell your dad from now on when backing to ALWAYS GET OUT AND LOOK. that's a big part to being a professional truck driver.

Ok, Thank you!

Why is this not the mentor's fault?

I certainly will tell him, I don't think it was much damage they had to replace the bumper seal on his truck? My dad is a smart guy I am perplexed that this happened, he will most definitely learn from this, I hope to hear back from him in a little while on what happens.

Don't worry; even if Swift fires him, there's plenty of good companies that will hire him.

That might not be the right terminology, he said something about a seal. It was very early in the am and I wasn't fully awake...
