Hey there. I have been reading this forum for a couple of weeks now and busting out my Google-## to try and research some OTR opportunities, and figured I might as well create and account and put myself out there.
A little about me.. 26/M/PA, just North of Pittsburgh. I am looking to get into trucking, and have contacted a couple of schools and CDL mills, but decided that I don't want to get put through the wringer with Schneider, Swift, and the likes. Roehl looked decent, but I can't go unpaid for 3 weeks for their training (14/7 sure sounds nice, though!). I then looked into a couple of local schools, but they all want 4-$6k, with programs ranging from 4 to 12 weeks. Well, I don't have that kind of money, and can't afford to finance another payment. I was then turned on to ShaleNET. From there, I found out about CDL training at my local community college, for which I have an interview this Friday. Hopefully I get accepted into the program. I will come out with Airbrake, Hazmat, Tanker, Doubles, and Triples, with some extra classes focused on the gas & oil industry.
I am looking for a decent company that I could work for around 2-3 years to get OTR experience. My end goal is to drive local tanker in the Marcellus Shale industry, but I am finding that I need AT LEAST 18 months experience first. I prefer flat bed to start (I think), and have contacted a couple companies to get some info.
I am not sure what will happen if I don't get accepted into the program. We'll find out Friday or early next week!
Thanks for listening.

Good career choice. Since you eventually want tankers, just start your career with tankers and start gaining experience and good paychecks.
Here's some good tanker companies that hire new CDL graduates:
Schneider Bulk
SVTN
Superior Carriers
Trimac
CTL Transportation
Two good flatbed companies that hire new CDL grads:
Melton Truck Lines
System Transport
Keep us posted! -
If the community college program doesn't work out, look at Prime Inc. for choice of flatbed or tanker training. Millis Transfer is excellent for CDL training and those drivers make average $50K

Thank you for the suggestions! I'll definitely update this post when I find something out.

I don't know of any company that will pay you while going through CDL school, but I think all will pay something for their training after you have a CDL. Roehl pays $600 for the first 8 days, then $90 a day for the next 8-11 days, depending on how much training they think you need before you test to get your own truck. The $600 if split in two sections, so if you get released from training in the middle, you may get $300 or something along those lines.
My training here has been great so far. Did my CDL school first, GI Bill paid for it, then came to Roehl...they are awesome thus far and I'm glad I made them my choice. No tanker though if that's what you're interested in. Good Luck!! -
I had my interview on Friday and I found out that I was accepted this past Monday! Excited! Taking care of the paperwork this Friday, and then class starts on the 24th. It's a 5 week total program. First week are a couple classes at the college followed by 4 weeks at a local trucking school. I have been making a list of places I might want to look into and have been researching via Google and this forum.
Chinatown Thanks this. -
Class is going well! We are entering into our 3rd week on Monday which is all ROAD TIME. Class was brutal, but we all came out fully loaded with endorsements!
I have a couple offers, an interview on Monday, and made a GREAT contact today with a frac company.
