Ya I am sure the county was to cheap to spend money on a guardrail. We pour all kinds of money into the highway fund and those monies get spent on something totally different. I'm sure the politician who denied the approval of a guardrail being installed is being hypocritical right now.

No matter where the origin of the fire was...why go to the hammer side and through the median? As someone noted earlier, (using their own personal experience as the example) pull it over on the shoulder and find the problem, or at least bail yourself out of the flames. Even with this additional information, it still makes no sense to be crossing the median, or even attempting to take the hammer lane median shoulder. There have been no reports of any other vehicles traveling on the south side lanes although at the time this incident occurred, and the location, we can almost guarantee there was traffic flowing south, perhaps he was trapped in the hammer lane.

They called for the NTSB to come to the site during the accident. It would seem that mechanical may be suspect.

You know if certain things are burning they can knock out a person, so I think it is best to wait and see what they come up with.

As they start to put names, faces, and individual stories with the victims, it just gets sadder and harder to read about....

Yes its horrible how these high school students were just getting lives started then something like this happens. Unfortunately these accidents will always happen no matter how safe everyone drives.

Of course the NTSB was called right away...two commercial vehicles, two drivers with HOS issues, two companies with maintenance and safety requirements to be perused.

"if certain things are burning"(?)...what do you do if/when you smell smoke(?)...drive through the median so you can have the sun shining on the smoky side? Too many "IF'S" and "what if's" to try and figure this out...in any case it makes no sense!

Now, to add into the confusion, on my way past the site this morning, about 100 +/- feet before (north of) the crime scene tape (opposite side-north bound side) I saw double skid marks with red markers nailed in them on the south bound slow lane, angling to the shoulder at about a 45 degree angle. My first thought was that possibly some other vehicle might have cut him off so close he had to lock up the brakes and maybe create a potential jack-knife effect of the trailer. Could the Fed Ex driver possibly have tried to turn into the trailer skid which would direct him towards the median? I did not see any sign of steer tires going off the road surface and into the shoulder gravel, so the skid marks could have been his drives, which could have brought the trailer around. The strange thing was...none of the oleander/median showed any significant damage...so he could have corrected to a cleaner configuration and penetrated the median at a clean angle.

Just drove through there about an hour ago and it was eerie for me. I didn't see any major damage to the oleanders but I was heading north. The last report I heard about 30 minutes ago was there there were no skid marks from the fed ex truck. Something just doesn't add up... they interviewed 3 to 4 people who live there and the one guy claimed no fire from the fed ex truck while others say there was... if no fire I could only think of heart attack or something of that nature. Not trying to play investigator at all but wow... Was really strange for me since I run that stretch twice a week. Was really crazy coming up to it and thinking that 100 ft. back those poor kids were happy and alive and its amazing how quickly life can end. So sad.
