I dont really see it as working for free. I wont be expecting a paycheck for the current settlement period, but I'll have covered my business expenses and allowed myself to have four days off without taking a loss. Keeping things sunny side up is part of how Im managing to still be out here. I will get a paycheck on Friday, break even next week, and as long as Im still running will have a check the week after that. Hubby gets paid on Friday too so with two paychecks, I have zero reason to stress. Breaking even is better than going in the hole.

Next month will be harder to get hometime for a lot of people. They can only have so many trucks off the road at one time and as someone mentioned earlier, there ate lots of people who will have graduation ceremonies to attend, and people taking family vacations with school out. Contractors usually have an easier time getting off than company. But more than once Ive heard my company buddies told they cant take off certain dates because too many have already requested those days off.

Frankly, the Virgin connection is just mediocre. I can get up to 4G speeds but on the other hand there are some large no coverage areas in places TransAm goes (like plenty of Kansas and Iowa). I use an upgraded, beefy wifi antenia and I have a mental list of places I can get a high speed connection on my normal routes for big downloads (like UFC events).

The Virgin Mobile package gives me the text and voice minutes to do the trucking job and works very well for my need of checking e-mail, keeping in touch using FB messager, Viber, WeChat, but if you are a really heavy data user, I think you would feel frustrated. Virgin is an unlimited data package but speed it throttled down after the first 2.5G.

But keep in mind I only pay $35 per month so since I am on the road only to save money so I can talk long vacations, I am super happy with my plan for my needs.

it happens when you dont get enough miles
your maint acct cant keep uo with truck repairs
    just look at your settlements
divide your miles by $.30 that a company driver makes
see if your ahead or behind that

lease settlements are very hard to understand can you say honestly you know where all the money went?

    HometimeQueen and Waynetp Thank this.

Actually it was closer to five grand in the hole which I patiently dug myself out of. My kids received no donations for Christmas. My inlaws chose to Christmas shop at Goodwill for all the kids and they got those presents on Christmas day. But when I went home in January for the day my husband and I decided to celebrate since I opted to stay out for the bonus, my kids actually made out like bandits. Ive had my share of negative settlements, but if I wasnt making money, I wouldnt have money to blow on new phones, laptops, ect like I have been able to.

Ive said before that if my family were completely relying on my income alone, this wouldnt work. But for what I want and need, Ive got a pretty sweet deal going. If Im negative, TransAm will give me advances so I can scale and eat through the week and I wont take away from money for bills. So they can cut my miles, but I am not going to literally statve
starve to death out here. And I can take it day by day and be one step closer to the finish line. I dont expect anyone to agree with what Im doing. Ive straight up told people that for most people its not a good idea. But its a win-win situation for ME.

Inb4op, this is the longest time that you will have to be away ....during the training process. I can count on one hand the number of times that my husband, a former company driver, wasn't pulling in the drive on schedule. When he started with TransAm the training was a much longer process and if anything happened that extended the process. It was a hard adjustment! Once you make it through this you will get on a regular schedule for coming home. As with everything there are little tricks that will help you. Always put in for your home time the minute you climb back into your truck ....don't wait til after you've been out a week. I am trying to think of how to word this to make it understandable .....I'll just give you an example, ok?....say that you come home every 2 weeks and that will fall on a weekend. You put in for your home time to begin at 8:01pm Friday night,(I know you guys run on a 24 hour clock),you have Saturday and Sunday as home time, you come back on duty at 6:59am Monday morning. That way you actually have two full days at home to enjoy being with your family ....this is the way my husband's coach taught him and it worked well for us. Gamma and ajacks this is for you also, and Waynetp. There are certain times of year it can be hard to get your days off exactly on your two week schedule ....May can be tricky and December. If the computer refuses to approve it the first time, change your time to the day before or the day after, if it still won't take it then call your DM and ask what days are available.....and immediately put in for those days.

I have been going back through the thread and trying to find the settlements ....Pete was the first one to post his and jaso posted one of his. I am pretty sure that you posted yours in September or October, Pete ....I haven't found it yet because I started reading posts from October. There is a lot of good information in the posts for that month. I also realized how many good drivers that we have lost ....it is sad. I did find the settlement that jaso posted this year it is on page 477 post # 4767. I still have to go back and search for Pete's.

There is a search engine on this thread, right hand side at the top of the posts ....but it is mediocre at best and a matter of luck in finding what you are looking for.
