I dont take offense, and i appreciate it. I trust Bill and the office guys. There are still a few things with freight I wasnt totally clear on with Covenant being one of them. I know Bill does have a lot on his plate. Iam a patient guy, I came in on the ground floor of a start up partnership. So I knew there was likely to be hiccups here and there. Sometimes my frustration gets me, but iam human.
They have gotten two accounts that will be beneficial in the future with two major customers. I just dont know how much comes out per week at this point.
One thing i keep in mind is the office guys really never had this much of a workload before. They got i think six new guys in a matter of weeks, so I cut them a break there as well.
I know there are a few in middle management in the Covenant side that for whatever reason dont like us, but the head guys upstairs love us. So i dont know what role "politics" plays a part in getting theyre freight. I know that side is busy, i get multiple fleet messages a day saying so. But they also do a lot of team freight that i obviously cant do.
Im gonna go with the flow here and see how the next few weeks pan out before i call a huddle in the office to see whats up.

I do want to clarify though, i still feel this is a great opportunity. I run half the miles i used to for the same money. Things are just getting rolling here. I will be here for the long haul.

I hope people don't get the wrong impression. We can and do run Covenant "proper" freight but that is for their trucks. Several times a day we get reports showing where they have excess freight and excess capacity. When they have excess freight and we have a truck that needs to move we will check to see what they have. That doesn't mean it is something that will work for us.
As far as our own freight. That has never been my business model and we are doing it now in very specific situations. We work with customers that are selective on who they work with and rate carriers on performance. We are Tier 1 and preferred with everyone so that gives us priority on loads. But it gets challenging when you have increased capacity combined with carriers looking to keep people near home for this past weekend that will haul for less than normal to keep people busy.
As far as relationship with Covenant, I am sure there are some that don't understand or like what we are doing. It is a large company and that is expected. But over all I am excited about the level of support I get from everyone.ampm wayne, Steeleandsonfarms, Pound Puppy and 1 other person Thank this. -
Slow weeks are a given at any company. Even more so when the company is picky about rates. Looking back almost 3 years ago compared to now, no comparison. Am positive things will improve again in another 3 years.

Im not bad mouthing the company. I am happy here. The reason i started this thread was to give my honest take on what Iam doing for better or worse.
I understand all to well the slow up and down cycles of trucking. It, and the recession, forced me out as an independent and in too leasing.
Im glad we are picky about rates as it benefits me, I just never learned exactly how the freight relationship works between Covenant and us. I know we run Star freight, Covenant subsidiary, as Im actually on one now.
I update the thread so those who chose to lease on with us know what to expect and can read responses to situations. The fact that Bill will take time to post here to update and (or) clarify things speaks to the professionalism here.
I dont expect to bust the bank every week, its simply not possible. Slow downs happen, this one was just very sudden. Three weeks of great averages and then cut in half, that hasnt happend to me since 2008. Thats why i wondered what was up.
Like i was told early on after orientation, the main men on the third floor love us, and thats really what counts.BigBadBill and nawarra1 Thank this. -
Those comments were directed at another poster - I should have quoted the post.

Nothing like starting the day with 3 inside flats that weren't flat last night.

Sorry Steele, hopefuly it wasnt on the truck.
Well Im 22 hours in waiting in Michigan. But after talking and reading it seems everyone is feeling it. Everyone cut rates to get home, now cutting them to get back out. Should stabilize and get rolling again soon. -
Well two trashed cores and one valve stem with hacksaw marks part way through. They were OK last night when I gauged them.
I'm at the 24 hour mark myself so no lost time but $50 repair bill. Could be worseLast edited: Apr 22, 2014
