None of the "autos" in trucks are true automatic transmissions like what's installed in a 4-wheeler. They are automated manual transmissions, so there's been a "shifter" installed to do what your leg does. True, there is a computer in there figuring out the shift points, but you can also select manual mode, and go back to shifting yourself. Not sure if the Volvo automatic is in that class... but it doesn't matter since Prime doesn't buy Volvo products. The one or two you see pulling Prime trailers are owner-op trucks.
Now, the downside... first they are not more economical than manuals. A driver who knows how to get the most out of his truck can beat an auto in fuel economy. The computers cannot anticipate road conditions and configure the truck in advance. Second, the maintenance costs can be catastrophic, especially for a small trucking company or owner-op. When these things break, they break badly. One can be left on the side of the road with the truck refusing to move... you need a tow. Many times the techs cannot find the problem, and the bills pile up rapidly... while you don't make a bit of money waiting for the shop to figure it out. I've heard one guy who used to promote the use of autos change his mind, and now say to stay away from them... he spent upwards of $25,000 chasing a bug that never got fixed. The Meritor automatic transmission isn't sold any more, and you can't even get service for them any longer.
Plus... remember the guys moving around the trailer yard or docking when in reverse they're moving way too fast? Yup... that's an auto doing their work, and there's nothing you can do to slow 'em down. It's an artifact of an "automatic transmission" that really doesn't work properly.HillJack Thanks this. -

There's two-pedal systems too, but they're automated manual transmissions too. You have to ride the brake to get the control effect of a clutch.

Will prime let you go home after your psd phase? I'm almost ready to come back to take my test for my cdl and was wondering well I be able to get home for a few days afterwards

I'll be back in SpriMo tonight.. anyone know what the schedule looks like for those upgrading? No one has actually told me what to do/where to go once i get to the campus inn..

You can ask your FM but it may spend on what your. TNT trainer is doing. My current trainee hadn't been home for like 2 1/2 months. I made sure he got home when I went on my home time this weekend

I think they changed it up a bit but just ask the front desk. More than likely you have a Smith System class at 8am tomorrow and then another meeting Wednesday at 1pm and then they assign you a truck.n3ss Thanks this.

It's not recommended. If you take home time during TnT what you learned during PSD will be reinforced.
