Yesterday the road was closed for almost 12 hours because of a tanker rollover. http://www.foxcarolina.com/story/25300589/wreck-blocks-both-direction-of-i-40-in-nc
I come through there less than 4 hours after it was all reopened. This is a stretch that limits the trucks to 50 mph and small vehicles to 55 mph. I don't get in a hurry, I'm behind a Fed Ex taking the corners a little slower, (I'm guessing he had a high centered load and I had one car on the top rack in the trailer so I wasn't cornering fast either, but maintaining 50 mph.) I get passed by a CRETE doing at least 60. And then they wonder why there are accidents on that road all the time? Take you time, once out of there, pick up your speed, you'll get there.

All I will say is new breed of truckers
Raiderfanatic Thanks this. -
This one, I'm going to have to dispute. New and old breed alike have a tendency to run like a bat out of hell through the gorge... the difference being that if, say, a Swift truck does it, there'll be all sorts of commotion on the CB about it, whereas it's silent if it's a small fleet truck or independent O/O who does it. And please don't give me the standard song and dance... I'm quite familiar with the spiel about, "we never do anything unsafe" right before the bragging about how they used to run triple digits on bias ply tires, drove for hours on end with "benny" as co-driver, etc. already. So, yes, I'm saying it.. not everyone who tries hotdogging it through the gorge is driving for a major carrier and relatively new.GoneButNotForgotten, drvrtech77, xlsdraw and 4 others Thank this.

One doesn't fly long through there. There is usually a train somewhere. I have seen a few think they have to pass everyone. I usually had a load of air filters going through there. I like a load with the word "air"
I normally kicked back and enjoyed the scenery. Beautiful country through there. One night I come through and one idiot would count each curve. It was annoying at first but quickly got funny when we figured out what he was counting. I think there was somewhere around 105 curves. -
Accident was at the 20mm before the gorge.......
EZX1100 Thanks this. -
I came thru there goin east right after it happened. I know the news story says tanker but it was a white freightliner pulling a dry van.
-
I noticed in the news story it indicated it was carrying 100 gallon containers of the liquid. Somehow a reporter somewhere equated that with "tanker".

I was headed up to I81 that day. Guys on the CB said it was sodium chloride he was hauling.

so all this rant for naught

Accident was at the 6, it was CLOSED at the 20. I was the 6th truck in line when they closed it, I got off went back to the Candler T/A and got parked before it got slammed full.
I guess reading is a skill.......
