There is a bigger issue at work here. For all the regs FMCSA throws at us, they refuse to address mandatory training rules. This guy obviously had not been properly trained. "Here's your CDL Mr Dufus. Hit the road"
FMCSA won't touch that subject because ATA and megas don't want any part of required training rules.
Blame it on the GPS again

Everyone is assuming that he had a trucker GPS. He might have had a tom-tom from Walmart.
When I first started driving, I had a tom-tom that tried to get me to use a very small ferry in Vermont. -
Ive not seen anyone else hit on this little bit but myself. Is anyone else annoyed at this statement?
"he just got his commercial driver's license 30 days ago.
They say he had never driven a tractor trailer until five days ago when he was hired" -
i had RM for 2 weeks. after it took me down a 12.6 road. it was quickly traded in.
-
3 years, i'm still waiting.

Snowwy... I do agree with you about setting the parameters..
However, a lot of drivers, especially new drivers are using there phone for a gps.. I ran into a new driver the other day at the drop yard who was using her old garmin for cars...
New drivers need to take the time a trip plan.. not just punch the address in a gps and go...
I have a good Rand Mcnally Trucker gps.. I also have the 2014 large laminated Rand Mcnally... -
Yeah.. I dont get the whole getting his CDL 30 days before and only driving a truck for the firstt time 4 day before getting the job...
Lobviously there is more to this story... be interesting to here what all comes out of this...
And if the company ever makes a statement. ? -
I'm pretty befuddled about how he "panicked" once he hit the first support and hammered-down the rest of the way across, taking EVERY SINGLE ONE out! Sheesh!!
I haul Overweight/oversize loads exclusively, and never depend on a GPS....KF7WTV Thanks this. -
My 1st thought! YES! Many kudos! But the carrying of the weight doesn't surprise me as much as the fact that it IS still standing, even without ANY crossbeams. Makes you wish these guys had designed the I-5 Skagit River bridge, doesn't it?
This was my 2nd thought! "New guy...? Yeah, I'll bet next check that it wasn't a truck GPS!"
And 3rd thought... I WAS required to notice, and ANNOUNCE, posted bridge clearances during my CDL drive test! He's not wearing glasses, so he must have been able to read the pretty yellow sign from several hundred feet... And I bet he's not wearing the same underwear!
