I can hear that.
There are some who subscribe to the myth that Big truck truck drivers who habitually run hammer-down easily cover far more miles than those who generally run the speed limits or under. I believed that too, once, back when I wore the clothes of a younger Big truck truck driver --- until it was brought to my attention that the company "hammer-down hard-runners" (about 5 of 'em (small company) ) yearly mileage numbers and mine were all in the same ballpark. Differences were in the hundreds of miles, not the thousands of miles more like I woulda guessed. My numbers were middleish in the pack, mileage wise. By their own admission, they "ran 'er hard, hammer-down", boop-boop!
I didn't run like that, ......... BuT, .............. if necessary, ...........
.......... I knew I had enough under the hood to run with the big dawgs, but it seems their left door was loose, an' kept openin' up causin' 'em to have to pull over at a Big truck truck stop to close it. Odds are only the ones with Cherry Master, and odds are said odds will be against 'em.
Again.
And again when they get back to drivin', they're behind a non-existent, flexible schedule, resultin' in a need to hammer-down to make up for lost time.
Again.
But when it came to MPG averages there was quite a gap betwixt their's and mine, --- with the gap startin' below me. The second name on the list came in at a two and a half MPG average less, -- and the bottom of the list was shy by around three and a half MPG. My MPG average caught the attention of the company owner who informed me that he wanted to clone me.
The question, "How do you manage to do that"? was asked.
I answered; that a story I had read inspired and encouraged me to apply the lesson of the moral of that story to my developing drivin' style.
"What was the story"? I was asked, --- I knew they would.
The Tortoise And The Hare, I replied.
Read it cover to cover twice, .... ended the same way both times so I figured there was somethin' to it.
I didn't tell 'em what the lesson is, they'd have to read it themselves if they didn't already know.
I don't think they expected my answer, and although the MPG average seemed logical, they couldn't seem to get past my yearly miles average. No way runnin' conservatively can rack up the mileage numbers that the hard-runners do.
Up 'till then I'da agreed with that.
But the numbers tell the real story, --- every year as it turned out.
Imagine that.
They couldn't.
Especially considerin' the Big truck assigned to me could run triple-digits, --- the driver before me received a citation for 113 mph, and he said she wasn't flat out ...... yet. He estimated another 5 to 7, maybe 10 mph was still left, --- accordin' to the tach.
Gear fast -- Run slow.
It works.
I know.
It's twue!
It's twue!
It do!
It do!
... :smt045 ...
They have scale house personnel like that on that side of the border too?
I had the unfortunate pleasure of meetin' one of 'em on this side of the border, --- in K-Falls, Oregon.
One of those experiences that make ya go "HuH?" and realize right away that it's one of those days-in-a-life you'll never forget, -- even if you wanted to.
But that's a story for later.
Remind me.
Right now I gotta go check a tire. :smt033![]()

4 million here since 1978
Dave 1960 and AfterShock Thank this. -
Nice flames, by the way. With a Doubles/Triples endorsement you could hook a boat on a trailer to the travel trailer hooked to the Pete. You wouldn't have to be a mind reader to know what a lot of Big truck truck drivers would be thinkin' when they see you. (I wish he was me.)
Welcome to The Truckers' Report Tooloose. -
Thanks Aftershock I painted the flames myself.
-
I have had to teach a few men to "push the chain". I would line up on the dock and roll into the sleeper. After about 45 minutes to an hour I would feel the bump of the dock. That man would be sweatin' like "the accused" and the heel of his left hand would be smoking. I knew he would have to do the same thing tomorrow without all of my assistance. He is now just another truck driver.
"semi" retired Thanks this. -
I'm bragging too. I'm in the 4 million club and still counting. Here's one, I have crossed the Rockies 2,280 times when I lost count. That was a few years ago. Now I don't leave. Gone logging in B.C. to stay closer to mama. One day she will kick my work boots off the coffee table and tell me to get back to work.
I agree with your uptake on educating the newbees. How about the armrest test?
If you are sitting comfortably with your elbows on your armrests, you are driving within your ability considering road conditions.........If you are sitting on the edge of your seat and staring over eight white knuckles.......slow down. -
john, I see you
-
I see trucking caused you one of these, one of those and one of others, at least you are smart enough not to have to be told twice. Been dere, done dat, wore out the T shirt.
-
But he's just another Big truck truck driver who knows how to back a semi-trailer into a dock 'till it goes BumP. :smt045
