Question on truck insurance

Here is what you have to do. I have my own authority and was trying to do the same thing with my little brother. He graduated school in Nov. and insurance was a pain. (I called all of the major ones I found on line etc.with Progressive agreeing to write it but we were limited to a 500 mile radius and they wanted 24k a year) I finally called my local agent I had been using for years, he got insurance on me alone which was not a problem then after it was through underwriting he added my brother. You get a good insurance policy on you and the GL will actually cover anyone who gets in the truck. The underwriters are looking at one thing, initial risk, but after your policy is in effect, it does not go back to them. It's a pain in the arse I know but it is the way you have to go around it to do it. Just think about all of the O/O's who bring their wives on with them with just a learners permit.......

 

Right! The reason I was saying my own authority is so my leased compaines load insurance wouldn't be an issue ... right?

I asked my current insurance company (FlyingJ) if I could just add him as a driver ... she laughed and said "Sure! But we will cancel you."

I just have to find an agent that doesn't chuckle every time I tell them I need help getting a 21 year old inexperienced driver with coverage while driving my truck.

That suggests that a new cdl driver could go otr under his own authority by doing the paperwork and insurance under an experienced guy's name.

I know some guys are hurting out there. Anyone want $5000 to run the paperwork through their name ?

 

No... I would not put myself at risk for an unknown. I am taking my brother but he will be driving while I am in the passenger seat till I am comfortable that he knows what he is doing. In the end it is not all about the money as it is to safety. My safety, the strangers on the road etc. When I am comfortable with him I will then start running team etc. What you are asking is for someone to add a truck to their authority for an inexperienced solo without training... that is a foolish thing to do if you have no experience and you do get someone to cover you..... All of the schooling in the world doesn't mean you can drive....

 

Engle....This comment was a tounge in cheek comment. Not meant to be taken seriously.

However, it appears from what is being said that this is possible to do. I find that a little hard to swallow. I would have thought that the insurance companies would be a little more carefull.

It literally means,, that someone could get their CDL and take off " under their own authority ", assuming they had the money to waste, and a willing accomplice.

It just seems strange to me, that it could be that easy.

No it wouldn't work because he is talking about adding the second person as a secondary driver to his vehicle not the other persons own vehicle. I can almost gaurantee if it were his own truck you would not be able to find an insurance co to cover it for an affordable rate

 

With the second person added as a driver, does this not mean he can then drive the truck solo. No ?

Surely a second driver on the policy does not need to be accompanied ?

And if this is the case.........an experienced guy could do all the paperwork in his name...........and then add another driver to the insurance policy. The first guy could be sitting at home whilst the second guy is driving the truck.

What you are saying makes sense......but is it really the case ? An additional driver on the policy cannot drive solo ?

it's concievable that they would only take him as a second seat driver which is how ins companies usually do this. This is how I learne to drive with my dad.
even if he could then drive that truck solo I doubt the insurance company would cover the new guy in his own truck which is what I thought you were asking
