Having a hard time deciding on which to start off doing, I hear tanker drivers get more pay but I'm more worried about surge on the tanker side. As a new driver would I be jumping the gun by starting off pulling tankers? Any suggestions?

    C & C and Chinatown Thank this.

In my opinion tanker is def the way to go. Surge isn't that bad and from my experience the pay is much better for the work. I have been pulling LPG tankers for about 9 months in texas.

Tanker it will open up many more doors in your future. It was the best move I have made. In the end, anyone can pull a van.

Tanker will force you to be a better driver. The surge of a partially loaded smoothbore is an eye opener the first time you forget and stop short. I prefer tanker over most else...

I've been pulling tanker virtually since the early days of my career. I only had a years taste of pulling reefer/van to realize this was not gonna work for me. Like the others say, go for tanker, don't worry about the surge. You will get used to it. Some liquids are worse than others. Just make sure you keep your foot on the brake at traffic lights etc. I've been hauling food grade and now chemicals.
And also you don't have to mess with lumpers and fooling with the tandems.
Best decision I ever made and I'll never pull anything else.
    Good luck.

Tanker, no question about it. During orientation and tanker training you will be taught about surge, don't worry.

Here's a list of tanker companies that hire new CDL grads; they all do even if the websites have different:

    Schneider Bulk
    Superior Carriers
    SVTN
    Trimac
    CTL Transportation
    Airgas
    Tidewater Transit

Definitely go tanker, Had I started out in tankers I probably wouldn't have taken an 18 yr. Hiatus
