They took a gamble... and it so far hasn't paid off. I'm guessing CNG hasn't quite taken off as expected for a number of reasons, not the least of which is going to be the oil companies. On top of that, there's probably a lot of skepticism towards it. The CNG engines are out, and they work, but there's probably an expectation that, as soon as CNG becomes a regular thing in the transportation industry, .gov is going to make up an excuse to tax the #### out of it (like they did with diesel, claiming it to be a heating oil).
As for the cigarette at the fuel pump question, that can be summed up with a Forrest Gump quote. You can figure out which one. -
Honda, Subaru have their primary haulers adding CNG trucks to their fleets...boss man said it is coming and they are investing in the trucks.

We have about 20 CNG trucks right now. I've seen lots of them. Especially in cities day cabs.
-
Swift has 250 new day cabs in Phoenix they are converting. One right after another. They had about 50 or so running around when I was there a month ago.
-
UPS is running, on a test basis, a couple of them out of Denver as well for line-haul.
Shaggy Thanks this. -
The company I work for pulls tankers Otr. We have some full CNG trucks and some hybrid diesel/CNG trucks. So far I guess they aren't too bad except for the lack of fueling stations out on the road.
-
Left the company recently. Northeast has some and some areas have the infrastructure not on line yet.
Also a former employer several years back... bought CNG tractors ( 20-30 ) within 2 years ago sat on them for a year and just completed a fueling station and open to the public.

I've seen UPS filling up their trucks at the Flying J in Phoenix, AZ with CNG

All of the trucks on one of my company's dedicated accounts are CNG. From what I hear, it was a stipulation in the account contract. I see them broken down on the shoulder a lot, as well as their trailers being pulled by Penske rentals. I haven't talked to any of the drivers to find out why, but from the frequency I'm guessing it's fuel related.
