I'm willing to bet number 5 liner is dropped. Egr cooler wouldn't cause a hydro lock. Very very common. Seems more prevalent in higher hp applications. I could be wrong but I can't see the coolant makin its way from the cooler all the way up through the intake tract then down the cylinders. Make sure the Shop doing it cuts all the counterbores and shims them to new spec

You would think if liner drop is the case, that it would show up on the fire ring like a sore thumb. Not saying it's not, but that is usually obvious on fire ring. It's difficult to see the headgasket from this side of the screen, datgummit.

I just stopped by the shop tonight I looked at everything my self.. we are at the point of no return its getting a full inframe done.. there a lot of evidence that coolant was in the liners rust and pitting.. also evidence that some one has already been into the top end judging by the silicone all over the place.. also looked like a cylinder was washed down at one time lots of strange wear on the liners.. the cams look great crank is great the rods and main bearings all looked like 720,000 miles but not more into the copper.. I did order a new head new egr cooler water pump and fan hub.. ill be happy to get her back on the road but what happened is a mystery that I would like to get solved..

If the shop cant put their hand on the failure and tell you this is what failed.
do you really want them building an engine for you?rickybobby Thanks this. -

Update. .. The truck is done and running good so far.. we are waiting for cummins to let us know if the head was junk.. I went all in with a new egr and egr cooler also new water pump.. New turbo for good measure so now to put her in the wind and make some money
Heavyd and QUALITYTRUCK Thank this. -
Delete the egr if you want improved power and mpg.

If they're sure the liner didn't shift, tilt, or drop...#5 is usually the culprit with #2 as a less likey possibility, then it's a cracked head. Finally got the "official, but we're not really admitting it" number of over 60% failure rate on the 550hp/1850tq CM871 and higher on the 600hp/2050tq
I'm in the process of doing a complete inframe on my '09 ISX. I was pressurizing the cooling system but no presence of exhaust gases...turned out to be a cracked head on the interior of the intake plenum, not visible, that on dead idle when the VGTurbo closed to pressurize the intake it would hammer the cooling system. 523,000miles and no policy! CDN$23,000 + 4000 for the turbo, and it's on me. I've got a call in asking for policy, but I'm expecting to be politely told to pound sand...I'll admit it, kinda wishing I would have gone C15 Cat, I'm not impressed as the rest of the parts look A-OK, but the head's pulled and my S/N is in the CPL of high percentage liner/block shifting failure so I'd be a fool not to do it now. -
Anyone know the run of s/n to look out for with potential low liner problems
