Start with log book covering last 7 days, insur. for CO. you are driving for, all permits state OR.NM. NY.hut.and fuel IFTA. IRP. tag reg. trailer tag rec.UCR and more depending on what you are hauling ?
-
All of it!!!
If you think you need it you will, there will be a Scale House Warden that will ask for all of it to see if you are on the ball!

Make sure you've always got your medical card with you... as that's one document you definately don't want to lose.
-
med card in the wallet... Copy of long form in with the permit book
-
thought only the med card all needed not long form in truck.

1. Proof of Authority (authority letter assigned when Authority was granted)
2. Proof of insurance (preferably the insurance card itself as well as the 'big form')
3. Registration IRP of tractor
4. Registration of trailer
5. State permits if necessary (most do not need to be carried with you, like NM, KY, and NY)
6. Proof of inspection done in the last year on both truck and trailer (if you don't have the sticker on your truck/trailer indicating when it expires or it's marked that the inspection is kept in the vehicle)
7. Logs, including previous 7 days minimum. But no more than 14 (you're required to send them to your carrier within 14 days, so either tell them you email/fax/transflo them, or don't have the white copies with everything else)
8. BOL (shows what you're hauling, rather important to be paid, as well)
9. CDL/Medical card
10. As much cash as you think is needed to bribe the DOT.

One of our drivers got picked off for not having a copy of the lease between him and the carrier. Also might consider having copy of passing road test when you hired on and a copy of policy relieving you of duty when taking meal breaks. Have been asked for both a couple of times in 37 years.

They have no business asking for that. You license proves you can drive a truck. I'm also pretty sure they have no legal ability to analyze a med card long form, there not doctors. I'm gonna check up on that with my buddy who is a DOT certified trooper.
