"Ticking" is never normal, can't say as I've seen an easy exhaust leak on the Acert either. I'm on my 3rd Cat manifold they have all leaked one way or another, this time it's the front slip joint on mine. On yours I'm just guessing but I'm thinking broken mounting stud. My next step is going to be a "Full Tilt" Ceramic manifold and mounting kit. No matter what it turns out to be never shut it off hot, after talking to their (Full Tilt) tech I found out I have been doing it wrong all along, never shut it off with exhaust over 350* and water over 170*. I've always just set the idle timer for 5 min. let it shut itself off, but after listening to their tech I sat in the truck and timed it, on a couple of hot summer days it took over 20 min. to get both temps down. I was amazed at how long it took, I'm also due a CAC (350,000 miles on it) this time I'm going to step it up also.

Next time you talk to that teck, ask him what happens when a gen set shuts down under a full pull, the manifolds are near clear, the turbo is orange, if it gets a code it just shuts down period. They did that in the 60"s and never hurt themself. Then it was posible for a turbo shaft to coke now it is nearly imposible. Unless you are pulling to the top of a hill with Max load, even then by the time you walk around and check you truck and fill out the paper work, you can shut it down, 99% of the time you will coast to a stop and you can shut it down imediatly. If you know you are going to stop then turn on the Fan manually, before hand.
A ticking sound from a valve set is not normal, it means either the set was done wrong or the rocker arm is bent, the set always gets tighter, from normal wear.
Just a thought! -
Noise in valve train is normal but the noise I am talking about is like a knock. It is hard to describe. But it is louder than any tick. It is like ping ping. I have 5 out of ten trucks doing it all mxs cats.

Guys I Tracked down the ticking noise and it seems like its coming from the air compressor head, maybe the unloader went bad.

The sad thing is what I call a peck others may call a tick. Without hearing it or knowing the individual and his knowledge of engines we could all be giving bad advice. The main thing is the op knows something isn't right some thing tells me his gut says its bad. I hope he follows his gut and gets it worked out before it cost a complete engine or something along that line. Its true we are not all mechanics, and some claim to be when whoo is a good word. A guy can be sharp as a tack on mods and building hp but not be a very good mechanic. To where a mechanic may have to study the changes but will be right in theory of it will or won't do as advertised. And a chosen few can do both. And just cause works on paper doesn't mean in real world apps it will. I have seen a lot of good advice in the garage section of this forum. I have learned some things too. My only point is go with your gut its usually right. Especially if you know your rig really well.
