I recently graduated and received my CDL. I've passed my test for the Tanker and Hazmat endorsements. Now, my decision is choosing Regional or OTR. I do plan on going with Schneider (I've talked with a recruiter).

Is there a major difference between Regional and OTR when it comes to the Tanker Division besides the home time? Do you like Regional or OTR and which do you prefer?

Although I am not a truck driver, I believe that OTR covers all 48 states, (or close to it), whereas regional is a "condensed" version of OTR covering a more limited area of the country, as the northeast, southeast, etc.. OTR is also 48 states and Canada.

From what I have gathered on the forum, regional tends to be more suited for a married truck driver with children. It allows more opportunities to be at home with the family.

Good luck to you! God bless you and your entire family!

God bless every American and their families! God bless the U.S.A.!

Thanks for the reply and help, mje. I understand all that good stuff, but I guess I'm looking at the salary decrease. Is it a dramatic decrease or is it a reasonable decrease? I'm 26, single, and have no kids... Either way would be fine. I was thinking about buying a house and starting my own business on the side as well.

No family....go otr and make your cake while you're young. Forget the side business for a few years....you more than likely won't have time. The more you roll the more you make.

I can't speak for Schneider, but at Superior I prefer running otr to regional. I usually make more money otr than whenI do regional or dedicated work, but that isn't really the main reason. I find that when I run regional I tend to be less rested than when I'm bouncing around in the system. Sure I get to sleep in my bed more often, but when I get home at 8 or 10 at night, then have to get up at 4 or 5 in the morning to load at 7 or 8, I don't ever feel like I get a good night's sleep by the time I eat, shower, etc. After doing that for a week or so I'm just beat.

When I talked to Schneider. Otr pays better. Your just starting I would take the extra .05 a mile. Regional should be in a smaller area, which would imply shorter runs and less money per load. Otr than can send you across the country, which is a longer run, but harder to get you home when you want. Put your year in, be careful and then see what else is out there.

I did 12 years with the Bulk Division at Schneider.

    OTR worked well for me.

Thanks for the replies. I know the main thing is to get that 1-2 year experience under the belt and go from there. Ain't nothing to it, but to do it. As long as I stay positive, I think I'll be fine.

Bingo! I don't want to get burnt out just because I'd rather have extra "playtime" on my schedule. I know things will not be perfect, but I don't need to add extra problems in. I'd rather be safe than sorry.

It really doesn't matter to me as long as I get loads. I'm paid a percentage of the loads I haul. Sometimes I'll run local for a few weeks and other times I run OTR. I average about the same OTR vs regional/local.

I didn't do regional, so, I don't know what's available to you. If your living in a convenient spot, maybe it could be good.

Like David said. I liked to go out, do my 2-3 weeks, then I'm done. take my 3-7 days off.

I hesitate to say, it always seamed that the regional drivers got jerked around more.

Sounds like you will run from Savanna. But your OCM is in Reserve.

PM me & I'll tell you who is cool.

1-2 years sounds like a good plan.

    I did 12 & burned myself out.
