Not sure what company is good to work for or one that isn't as bad as the others

    I have about 4 months of experience and the company I work for currently does flat bed which I do enjoy doing but they don't have a tarp fee, I only get 25% of the load profit, they have older beat up trucks which makes it so you feel every bump in the road, and they don't have a riders policy either, and they have forced dispatched too. I have read forum after forum trying to figure out which company isn't going to treat me like a piece of crap. Right now I only make 1300 every two weeks after taxes and I still have to pay for my insurance which will be another $160 of my check every two weeks I have 5 kids and I need a better paying job if not I might have to go back to the oilfield industry, but I really enjoy driving truck and I don't want to do that. So if there is anyone that can maybe steer me in the right direction as far as which company will treat me like a human and not a machine it would be greatly appreciated. Also I am a US Veteran and I know some companies like to hire Veterans.:biggrin_2551: Not sure what to do!!! Any in put about recent or past experience would be nice to know. Thx

    All seem to have pretty decent reviews from drivers. Im told Maverick's trucks are all automatics. Melton is currently changing their fleet out with newer model trucks. And TMC is going from the older style Peterbilt 379 to the 579. Myself personally i am scheduled for orientation with TMC the week after my graduation date. All three companies have verterans programs.


    Oh and TMC has major freight lanes right here in Ohio

    Your options are gonna be limited with only 4 mo experience. Any company that will hire you is not going to be a drastic improvement. If it were me, I'd ride it out for another year or so because then you will have a lot more options. The desirable and high paying jobs require experience.

    If you have tanker/hazmat endorsements, go that route.

    Tyson Foods is an excellent company with good benefits.
    Melton Truck Lines has excellent family healthcare benefits.

    1. Who in the heck do you flatbed for that pays that cheap? You should be doing a grand a week bottom line.
    2. How can they pay you percentage if they're forced dispatch? They should be paying you deadhead miles if they make you deadhead, right?
    3. Is your 4 months clean, no incidents?

    Dozens of companies will hire you with your 4 months experience. Right now you make $1300.00 every two weeks, but you can make that every week with the right company plus have a full benefits package with a retirement plan. Many tanker drivers take home every week, what you make now in two weeks. Here's some companies and they all hire new CDL graduates, so you're qualified in that respect. Ignore any "experience required" on the web sites because they all hire new drivers.

    WL Logan the Deadhead is .10 cpm, yes, I haven't had no tickets yet. Knock on wood....

    One of the 3 mentioned in post 3 should be a good fit for you if you really like to flatbed. Don't expect a lot of tarp pay at any company, especially if on percentage. They figure you're getting some of the tarp charge that is built into the billed rate (via your percentage pay) + whatever the carrier pays you as accessorial pay (tarp pay) additionally.

    Also as a new flatbedder, you'll be tarping loads twice as fast before the year is out and it won't seem like such a "chore", and you will also learn a lot of other back-saver and time-saver techniques over time. Some by watching others, some by finding your own groove.
