I would tell your son to move south, advise him to look in or around Atlanta. Most departments like the Atlanta Police, Foulton County Police, Clayton county police, and the Cobb County Police are large, have room to move around,
many divisions, pay a living wage, and ARE CONSTANTLY HIRING. I'd advise him to especially consider Cobb, its an affluent suburb, and with the braves moving stadium location in a hiring crush to pre '96 Olympics proportions. I worked for Atlanta around the time of the Olympics, it was truly a great department. It had a big city vibe, but a small town feel. The APD has everything a cop could want, and it's becoming much safer due to the exodus to the suburbs. Above all avoid DeKalb County anything, they are the roughest and most corrupt county in the state , just last week a baby was shot to death in gang retaliation! Their CEO and his cronies used the PD as a tool to extort money. Also avoid Miami, Nashville, Charlotte and especially Memphis. All of those cities are 10x worse than DeKalb.

I misunderstood you and I'm sorry about that. Where I'm from there is only one way to treat an officer of the law and that is with respect. He may be a prick but the badge he wears and the law he is sworn to uphold is what I was taught to respect. I've had my share of tickets, but I never got one I didn't deserve. Two weeks ago I was cited in a small town in PA for over length trailer in a business district. This Sergeant was not the stereotypical cop an earlier poster said has no intelligence. He was courteous and professional and treated me with the same respect I treated him.
He could have cited me for other related violations but didn't, probably because of my demeanor.

People are very quick to condemn peace officers, and I thought that is where you were headed. I don't know if you have a brother or not, but I can tell you that if you did and you watched him as I did my brother at 4am approach a dark vehicle full of questionable suspects you would know the fear I felt for him and for every officer of the law. It is a dangerous and militant world and someone has to protect those who can't protect themselves.

That said, I have never before now, since becoming a truck driver felt so targeted. I know that the slightest infraction will not go unnoticed and that I will likely be receiving a ticket for an offense that a motorist in a car can get away with. It is unfortunate but it is what it is and comes with the territory. I've met some truck drivers in this forum and on the road that are real butts too. I'm sure you have as well.

OK, I'll get off my soap box now.

What happened was I was seen driving out of an area of town that has length restrictions. There were no signs that said 53ft trailers not allowed, in fact there were signs that read 3 or more axles, no turns, which I obeyed. No signs that said no trucks. Apparently a Pennsylvania law statewide that doesn't permit 53ft trailers. 48 ft . ok, according to the officer.

Im guilty as charged, and felt pretty stupid. One hundred fifty dollars later I've learned my lesson.

There is no statewide restriction on 53' trailers in PA. PA's favorite posted restriction is a 102" width restriction for doubles and trailers longer than 28 1/2'. It's a good revenue generator for local municipalities. You may be thinking of New York, with has a 55' overall length restriction for combination vehicles outside the NN.
