NYC needs a permit and I believe Chicago has a ban on handguns other cities and even towns may have their own laws. Goto the NRA site for the laws.

I would carry my old police badge or something similiar for ID and they probably won't make much of a fuss if it's properly concealed.

If you drive for a company they may have policies against this.

No worries guys when some pyscho steals a truck of hazmats, explosives, and drives it into a building killing hundreds THEN we we will get the same rights airline pilots do.

The US is the expert at passing laws and making changes AFTER the tradgey.

Found this in a column written on a rival site to this

    Q
My question is: if I have a concealed weapons license, can I carry a weapon when driving and be legal? Some say yes and some say no. I just want to find out what is legal and what is not. Thanks for taking the time to read and I am hoping for a response.

    A

This is a very common question with a very clear answer. No, it is not legal to carry a weapon during interstate commerce even if you hold a state concealed weapons permit. The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms (ATF) regulates this. You can find the regulation language in "The Gun Control Act of 1968: Title 18, United State Code, Chapter 44, SS 926." Other provisions of this chapter and related chapters also apply.
The only exceptions to this are if you hold a federal (not any individual state) concealed weapons permit, or if you are a qualified and approved law enforcement or retired law enforcement officer.

In addition, I am not familiar with any carrier that allows a driver to carry a gun. For every carrier I am familiar with it would be a policy violation that could result in termination. Because of this, it is largely irrelevant if a driver holds a permit at any level.

It should also be noted that drivers are not permitted to carry a weapons into Canada or Mexico and there are many carriers that transport internationally

you do for a living, but apparently it's not law-related.GCA68,Title 18,Chap44,ss926 has nothing to do with carrying a legally, licensed concealed weapon. It pertains to ANYONE,no matter what mode of transportation,to be able to transport a firearm from one location where you are legal to have a firearm to another where you are legal to have a firearm.Train, plane, car or truck.Thats what it pertains to.Federal law says who may own a firearm, but the states says who can carry.I have looked myself, contacted the legal dept at OOIDA,the TX AG's Office, several state DOT officers and highway patrol and each have said the same thing:There are no federal laws pertaining to the carrying of a legal firearm in a CMV.States laws are what affect everyone and they make no distinction between CMV and any other vehicle.:biggrin_25512:

As I stated I saw it on another site and reposted here. It would really be a shame if the other site is publishing false info, it seems the question was posed by a newer driver to the writer of the article. On a more positive note I did see in GOA's recent e-mail I recieved they had info on a federal reciprocity law being proposed for anyone with a CCW not just law enforcement. I haven't had a chance to check it out but I would hope it would apply to truck drivers as well and not make us an exception....

Thanks Bulldog, very good reading, bottom line is no matter where you go, what you haul or who you drive for sooner or later you will run into the rule, no fire arms permitted, so its really simple, even for us old retired coppers, DON'T carry a gun in your truck and you won't have anything to worry about.
