I wouldn't hit the switch until I'm down to a speed that would allow a shift from 6th to 5th. Transmissions don't seem to like it when you do that at a higher speed.

Learn to skip gears because you're breaking the law if you're neutral. They say you have lost some control. Whether right or wrong coasting in neutral is against the law. What I do is let the engine drop way down then go from 10th to 7th or 6th then stop. If I catch the light when it changes to green I bring the rpm's up and select the right gear for the speed and go. Most all of my driving a gasoline tanker was done in the city. When you're out there for 12 hours everyday you learn how to let the truck work for you. The selector only works when in neutral. You can switch it up and down all day long while in gear and in does nothing. But while in neutral it does it's job so way would you want to over work the tranny?
