So, driving tanker seems profitable, whats the catch?

Finding something that is regional that pays the same rate as OTR isn't all that hard. The problem with regional is your miles are usually lower because they have to keep you closer and you will go home more often. Which means more short weeks. It's hard to get good miles when you're home 3 or 4 days. Now there are some awesome regional runs so look around.

 

Tanker is DEFINITELY where it's at... I just graduated CDL school a couple of months ago and moved out to the West Texas oilfields to take a job driving a bobtail tanker around frac sites and refueling equipment, and after a week on the job I'm happy to say so far, so good.

The work is EASY and the pay is killer. I should make about $2k this week after taxes and considering I spent most of the week training, that's all good by me.

The guys who work for the company and bring fuel to the sites where we are in massive tankers work less but get paid similarly too... plus they get to sleep in their beds every single night.

Lots of great-paying work out here in the oilfields, but out of all the driving jobs I've seen, NONE offer pay and incentives like tanker driving.

Hell yes on the west Texas!!

I moved out here and got into tankers and the money is very good. I haul Y grade propane and I think that scares the 4 wheelers as they seem to stay the hell away from me. I don't have to back up into weird places as most of the plants don't allow it and I don't sleep in truck stops.

Bad news is that I cant leave the truck unattended at all...ever but the demurrage pay more than covers that little inconvenience.

For new drivers that can pack up and move here there is ample opportunity!

First I'd look for a tanker job that pays by the hour. There's too many hang ups at the loading rack to just sit there. The reason that tankers pay more is for the fact that you've got to know the properties of the product you're hauling. With general freight you might have an idea but it would never be held against you if the load spilled out on the highway. Tankers are different. You must know all the facts about what that load will or will not do. Your the spokeman for that shipment.
