That's what my nephew's father-in-law did with his 387. Wheel base is 240". I'm glad that my 379 is 265", it makes a world of difference.![]()

I greased the fifth wheel my first week on the job. it was dry as a foxes fart,
One theory i have is the truck is left at the dock, and other pick up drivers move it so they have access to load /unload.
on the truck the diff-lock and fifth wheel slide are above each other , maybe it was moved inadvertently,who Knows? as the drive wheels drop into an 8in deep hole, about 12ft diameter in front of the dock. as you hit the dock your climbing out of the hole and need the traction. (They promised to fill it, but they also promised my $4)
maybe i should fork out more of my own hard earned cash and go on the scales next time I'm loaded
so I will use tom's measurements, and stranger's method, and keep you informed thanks again for the advice

Yea, just infront of the center between the drive's is the standard/basic setting. Look at another company truck with a stationary 5th wheel and it'll show you. Yes, a dry 5th wheel will indeed screw with how the truck steer's. A good way to regrease it take a stick or piece of a pallet or something and completely clean out the groove's on top of the plate and fill them with fresh grease then apply plenty of grease on both fork's just above the taper. Don't be shy with the stuff because it does take a good bit.

What does your steering axle weigh when you are empty? -
I've never seen it over 9700 or under 9000. -
heres an update
i went to my work Saturday afternoon, and moved the F/W just ahead like you said
i did a practice turn ..........ok to the left , but whoever repaired the air lines obviously didn't have the right stuff ,as there was a jumble of fittings to get to the right end to connect to the hose adding about FOUR INCHES to the length of the assembly sticking out of the bracket, this would have caught the corner of the trailer. on a tight turn, so i backed of with the adjustment and got about 3 inches forward.
this has helped immensely no more sliding, or shimmying on rutted high ways.
I'm gonna be getting the right fittings for sure and maybe get another notch maybe.
