I'm going to become an owner/operator soon. I'm being told it takes about 3 months to get a US Dot #. I haven't bought my truck yet. Do I need a truck before I apply for my US DOT #?

USDOT # is instant and you do not need a truck. MC # takes a few weeks to go active. Yes you will need a truck for that because you can't purchase insurance without one.

Thanks a bunch for the info. I read something here on this site about getting a retired owner/operators MC #. Is that easier & I won't have to pay the $300? What about the US DOT #, can I get that from him too?

There is a fee to transfer a mc number from one person to another. You would probably be as well off just applying for your own number. Besides, you don't know what type of reputation the person has or how he conducted his business. Those thing can follow the mc number. You should be able to get your mc number in about 3 to 6 weeks from the time you apply. Everything can be done online in about 30 minutes or less. You can pay the $300 filing fee with a debit or credit card. You apply for the dot number the same time you apply for your mc number. I would get the truck first, because you will need insurance on file with the fmcsa before your authority will be active and most insurance companies require you to have equipment listed on the policy before they will cover you.

Simple file Mcs-150 (DOT #) file for authority (30 day wait) in that time you must find a truck. Keep in mind rolling freight you can haul in state before you have authority only thing you can't do is cross state lines.

Not necessarily, many states require their own intrastate authority.

Pennsylvania, for example, even if you have federal authority, you still need authority from the PUC if said load is both picking up and delivering within PA.

Depending on where he's at though this is good advice. I'm pretty sure I got intrastate authority in Texas pretty quick, like a day or so.
