Is their lots of tying knots involved to secure rope to the bed to secure loads down? Also is flatbed a good start if I'm a fresh graduate. I want to do it because starting pay is much higher then dry van but thinking I'm biting off more then I can chew with learning how to drive on the road while also worrying my load ain't going to fly off the truck if I tied it down wrong.

Knots are not allowed on your securement, some of us use rope on our tarps but I use a few bungies on the tarp first.

Do it if you like to get dirty, sweat bullets in the summer, and freeze in the winter. I wouldn't do it for money as the only motivation.

I would definitely recommend Melton over TMC. Wouldn't recommend TMC at all, actually. See earlier posts about them. Their pay is lower and they don't run enough miles to make it easy to make good money. Their orientation is something no man in his right mind would want to go to. They pull that bs of insulting and ridiculing the attendees - I guess to see who will flip out on them, but that is not necessary. They get a good chunk of money from daddy obama for everyone that they accept into the "training"/orientation. They get their money whether they send you home (on YOUR DIME) or if you complete their course.

Cypress in Jacksonville, Fl will hire you with the experience you have. I just came back to them after 12+ years of dry/reefer van work. I'm 53, 5'6" tall, and handling the work just fine. Our tarps are heavy, I'm talking every bit of 100 lbs each. Try rolling the tarp end over end up the drive tires to the deck, that's if no one will help you......I prefer asking the forklift driver to take care of it. Most have no problem. Of course having another willing flat bedder near by to help is always good too.
