Hey everyone, Im going to be using a parking lot for my truck up in Reno, NV. (I live 30 minutes away in Lake Tahoe).
Is this a good city to be based out of? i.e. will I have a difficult time finding good rates going out and coming home? Thanks for your help.
The alternative, would be to park in Sacramento, but this is a 2 hour drive from my home lol. But you gotta do what you gotta do sometimes

I show three carriers coming out of Reno and headed to Chicago who are getting a rate of
1.93 per mile. Coming back on the return trip from there is 2.04 per mile. Those are use the rates, I don't know how much freight would be in those lanes. -
Ouch, that sounds terrible. how are you even operating in the black with those rates?
I think I should just base myself out of sacramento then. My friend in the northeast (PA) is averaging 3$ a mile over the month running a dry van. -
Are you pulling reefer?
-
im renting a dry van. im exploring my options with the reefers. i know sacramento and salinas valley are hotspots for reefers
-
And you are a one truck operation? Or are you managing a company with lots of trucks? What is your setup?
edit:
are you trying to cut california off your map because of carb issues? -
yes a 1 truck operation. plans to expand down the road after i get settled. I have a 09 volvo that is CA clean idle certified, so no issues there.

I don't see why it wouldn't be a bad option to leave it in a paid, secure space in Reno. If you had a reefer and could get around $2 from Chicago to Reno you would go empty into Cali to get that produce ... If you have a regular mechanic, maybe ask him if he has yard space you can leave your truck at while you are home - in turn give him all your repair work.
Mark31580 Thanks this. -
not a bad thought, thank you. Reefers going from Sacramento to points east usually get 3$ plus a mile, correct?
and then if i can get 2$ home, i could deadhead it for 2 hours to back to SAcramento. -
California reefer rates vary widely, depending on the number of loads compared to number of available trucks. I don't have any first hand experience with California produce, but I know people who do. Typically east to west, you are LUCKY to get a load for 1.30 or more per mile. The key to it is hitting the market when you can grab 3 or even 4 or more per mile, even on the long loads all the way across the country. However, let's say it rains and the pickers to pick the produce can't get into the field. The rate may drop under $2. Then the next day it might be $4.
It is a crap shoot.Mark31580 Thanks this.
